Derrick's POV
" Sir, she's here," West said as he came into my office.
" Where is she?" I said to him.
" In the living room," he said to me.
" Did she come willingly?" I asked him.
" No sir, she didn't," he said to me.
I was irritated by the fact that he hadn't found my wife; I gave him everything he needed, and he had everything at his disposal; this should have been resolved a long time ago, and my wife should have been home.
I had a terrible Christmas, and all the gifts I left for my wife were still unopened, including the ones I left around the house. I know she loves Jewelry, and I make sure that she gets the best.
I loved Christmas, I think it's the only time of the year I look forward to. I thought that my wife would be home by then. Not only was my wife not there, but my mother wasn't there either. She said some things that might have damaged our relationship even more.
Still, I love my mother. She knows that. She might not understand me or my reasons for doing things, but that doesn't mean that I don't want her in my life because I do. We are all we have for each other.
From the age of fifteen, it has always been us. She has always been there for me. That is why I have to make things right. She might not realize this, but she means a lot to me. I got off my seat and went to the living room. She was seated on the couch.
" Mother..." I said to her and sat next to her.
" You can't just order your henchmen to fetch me like I am one of your little whores! What do you want?" she said to me.
" First, I want to give you something," I said and took out a gift from my pocket. I gave it to her.
" What do you want?" she asked me.
" I could never fool you," I said to her.
That's the truth, she always saw through me, no matter how much I tried to hide it. I can't lie; I need her help now more than ever.
" What do you want?" she asked me.
" I need your help with something," I said to her.
" You want my help? With what?" she asked me.
" Finding the woman I love," I said to her.
" I don't know how I can help you or if I want to help you," she said to me.
" Mother, surely you can see that I need her here; I am a mess; I am afraid that I am going to lose control," I said to her.
" Derrick, son..." She said and took my hand into hers.
" If you get her back right now, she will just run away again because you are still the same man you were when she left; if you want her back, if you want her to see you again, give her something worth coming back for," She said to me.
" I am not sure I follow," I said to her.
" I have often wondered what would have happened had your father tried harder for us; if he had got the help he needed for us, things would have been different for us; you have a chance to break the cycle.
Your father deserved his fate, you might be part of him, but you are also part of me, which is why I refuse to believe that there isn't some of my goodness in you.
I know you have it in you to change; you need to get help, professional help, let Chloe heal, and give her the space that she needs. I know that she loves you; I mean, I saw it from the first time I met her; you caused all of this; you alone can fix it, " she said to me.
" How do I fix it?" I said to her.
My housemaid came into the room with a man I didn't recognize. He carried a briefcase, and he looked serious; he must be some sort of law enforcement; he had a certain aura about him.
" Sir, there is a gentleman here to see you," She said.
" Thank you, Marie, I'll take it from here," I said to her. She left the room.
" Mr Cartwright?" the man said to me.
" Yes, that would be me," I said to him.
" Great, I have something for you," he said and put his case on the table. He took out an envelope and a clipboard.
" Mr Cartwright, you have been served," he said and gave me an envelope.
" What? Am I being sued?" I said with a little laugh. I mean, I have everyone in my pocket; no judge in this town could go against me; I always win; everyone knows that. So who could have the audacity to try that with me?
" I need you to sign here," the man said and gave me his clipboard. I signed on to it. The man left.
I took out the contents of the envelope; there were two documents and a sticky note attached to a USB stick.
" Play me first!" the note said. I recognized the handwriting, I knew who it was.
" What's that?" My mother said to me.
" A late Christmas gift from my wife," I said and gathered everything on the table.
" From Chloe?" she said to me.
" Yes, it looks like that," I said to her.
"Then what are you waiting for? Let's see what she has to say," my mother said to me.
" I'll be right back," I said and went to my office, I took my laptop and came back down with it. I connected the USB, there was a video from Chloe. I pressed play.
" Derrick, I am sure that you are surprised by what happened, and I want you to know that I blame myself for all of it because I allowed it to go that far.
I loved you, you know that I did, but even my love couldn't be enough for you; I have lived my life for you for so long; I didn't know what life without was like. This is for me; this is what I want.
I need you to leave my family alone, to tell the police and the media that I am not missing, lastly, I want you to sign the divorce papers.
You might wonder why there are two; that is because I am giving you two options: sign the papers and let me get on with my life; that is what the first one says.
The second one states that failure to do this amicably, I will be forced to fight for half of everything you have; when I do that, I might just have to hand over some incriminating evidence that could get you into a lot of trouble.
I mean the evidence of the crimes you did, from bribing officials, paying off hitmen to kill witnesses, I have it all, phone records, tapes, proof of p*****t, it is all there. This is not a threat!
Call my lawyer when you have decided" she said looking into the lenses.
" Is the threat real?" I asked my mother.
" Yes, it is real, She is out for blood," she said to me.
" I'll kill her for this," I said and threw the laptop across the room in anger.
" That is her ass right there!" I said.
" Calm down!" My mother said to me.
" She just threatened to burn this whole s**t to the ground. Does she think that I am going to roll over and do what she wants? I'll show her!" I said.
" Show her what? That you are exactly what she thinks you are? Yes, that's a brilliant idea, why don't you go ahead and prove to her that she's right about you." she said to me.
" Then what is it that you want me to do? Tell me!" I said to her.
" Firstly, you need to show her that you are not the monster she thinks you are; right now, she's expecting you to fight her, sign the papers, and give her a clean break," she said to me.
" If she doesn't come back to me, then what?" I said to her.
" Then you fix yourself so that the next time she sees you, she sees the better version of you, you make her fall in love with you, and you remind her why she belongs with you," she said to me.
" I can't, mama; I can't let her go," I said to her.
" You have to, son; you have got to let her be," she said and squeezed my hand a little tighter.
" I know that you see the best in me, that I could have some part of you, but I am sorry mother, I can't, I am not good. I know that you have been in contact with Chloe's best friend," I said to her.
" What? How did you? Wait a minute! Did you bug my phone?" she asked me.
" That is not the point; the point is that I know she knows where my wife is; she won't tell me, but you, you, she might say something to you if she hasn't told you already where she is," I said to her.
" Yes I spoke to her best friend, but only because she called me to tell me Chloe's mother was in hospital, she was wondering if I had seen her, if she was hiding in my house!" my mother said to me.
" You know, now that I think of it, this would make sense. Who else would she run to for help if not to you?" I said to her.
" I don't know what you are talking about," she said and moved her hand from mine; she didn't look at me when she said that. She's lying, she knows me, but I know her too; I am his son, after all.
" Chloe! I am talking about her escape. You're lying to me, mother; you know something; tell me what you know?" I said to her.
" I don't know what to say, I don't know where she is," my mother said and stood up.
" Tell me!" I yelled and kicked the table, and she flinched.
" Fine, she did ask for my help, but I don't know where she is, we both knew that you would find out, that you would be angry, so I told her not to tell me, I don't care what you do to me, as long as she is safe from you!" my mother said.
" You will regret it! I will make sure of it, West!" I called out my PI. He came into the room.
" Yes sir," he said.
" Get her out of my sight!" I said to him.
" Right away sir, I'll take her home," He said to me.
" Home? No, take her to the warehouse," I said to him.
" But sir, she's your mother," he said to me.
" She should have thought of that before she betrayed me," I said to him.
" It's okay, I deserve whatever is coming to me, as does he!" my mother said.
I am disappointed in my mother; she is supposed to take my side to support me in everything I do; instead, she betrayed me in the worst possible way; she will regret this, and I'll make sure of it.
