Chapter Three There was a chapel in Rutledge House at the far end of the family wing, adjacent to the formal drawing room on the main floor. Neither room was used often—although occasionally Angela and James used the chapel for erotic purposes. They were married there in a quiet ceremony, weeks before a grander wedding was staged on the estate lawn. The chapel ceremony had been private, performed in secret with the priest alone. It reflected the very mysterious aspect of a most unusual marriage. For that, and many reasons, Angela found this gentle grotto quieting. The walls were of the same pink rock used for the rest of the house—though that stone glowed inside, just as the exterior of the house would glow at sunset. The woodwork was soft to the touch and the damask drapes with their sen
