CHAPTER THREELord Yelverton woke early in the morning and lay in bed for some time thinking. Then he rose and putting on his bathing shorts found that beside them there was a robe made of white Turkish towelling. Wearing a pair of heelless slippers he then wandered through the passages and out onto the verandah where he found not his host as he had expected, but a servant waiting for him. “Señor say, go down beach.” he said. Lord Yelverton nodded a reply and walked through the coconut trees and hibiscus shrubs as he had done last night and then down the twisting steps that led to the sands below. Inevitably he found his thoughts returning again to Tula and his strange conversation with her here in the moonlight and now he told himself that what he had said was so uncharacteristic that
