Nina POV
"Ouch, ugh, my body hurts." I opened my eyes and a knot formed in the pit of my stomach. What is this? There's nothing but darkness surrounding me. Not the darkness I am used to, but a deep void that seems like I am seeing it with my eyes. What is going on? How did I get here? I thought to myself.
"You passed out," Aurora said.
"Your body is weak right now, and you pushed it past its limits causing you to drift into this realm," she continued.
"What? Realm? Aurora, what are you talking about?"
"I cannot reveal too much because the goddess has plans for you once we meet our mate, but until then, you have to continue to be strong and trust your instincts. And also eat" She laughs.
"I doubt the goddess has anything for me. I am no one who has nothing, not even sight. I am sorry you had to be stuck with me, Aurora. I will do everything in my power to make you happy, I promise. I don't think I could handle losing you too." I replied.
A rush of fresh pine trees hit me when she began to reply to me. It was as if all the pain in my body went away immediately. I was tingling all over, but in a good way, a very good way. What is this feeling?
"Mate! Nina, mate!" Aurora said.
"What?"
"Open your eyes, Nina. Mate is here. He will protect us. Open your eyes!"
How? If I knew how to open my eyes, I would have done so a long time ago. I felt so comfortable, fresh, warm yet provocative; the smell was consuming me. I wanted to embrace it now. I wanted to hold onto this feeling of him. I wanted to have it, but how do I go back?
"Nina, you can go back whenever you are ready. Just open your eyes. Mate is waiting."
"But what if he rejects us. What if he is disappointed because I am blind or not pretty enough. What if I lose him too? No one has ever been happy to see me since my parents died. What if he is like that too?" I begin to yell anxiously at Aurora.
"Mate will protect us, Nina." She reassured me.
Well, here goes nothing. I do my best to think about opening my eyes, and I could feel my body begin to drift. Almost like I was being elevated. It was a frightening feeling, although I was more afraid that I might be rejected. As I was doing so, a bright light appeared. I could feel my body again, and someone else's too. I could feel someone's breath on my cheek and smooth lips on mine. Wait, lips? What the hell is going on. I hurried and forced my eyes open.
"What the hell?" I asked, feeling my heart beating a thousand miles per minute.
The person did not say anything, but I could feel him jump off the bed. Why was he kissing me? Why do I feel so happy right now? What the hell was wrong with me? This pervert could have felt me up while I was passed out. Why was I happy. Ugh...
"Mate!!! It's our mate!" Aurora howled.
"Mate" slipped out of my mouth, and the person in the room with me growled right after and immediately left the room, slamming the door. I could feel Aurora's heart sink. Panic set in. I knew it; there's no way I would have a mate. What if when he really rejects me, will Aurora start to hate me and shut me out? What if I get abandoned and left with my aunt and uncle? I begin to hyperventilate.
"Calm down, young one. He must have been just as shocked as you. Remember, he was kissing us, and you waking up suddenly must have embarrassed him. Our mate will realize who we are, and he will protect us, and we will protect him." Aurora said sweetly. Her words calmed me down enough to where my breathing was normal. His scent lingered in the air, and I shamefully took as much of it in as I could. He sort of smelled like the Alpha. The Alpha always smelled like fresh spring air. But my mate's smell was more powerful. It was on a different level. I hope he'll see me for who I am and not what I am.
As soon as I heard the words mate, I wanted to pounce on her, f*ck her until she nearly collapsed again from pleasure, and bit into her neck, claiming her as mine. I needed her and bad, but that frustrated me. I know it was also Dax's desire coming through to my thoughts, but I could feel my desire creeping through. I was pissed. I do not want someone as fragile as that tiny girl. Why me?
"Why did you leave, mate?" Dax asked.
"Not now. I need to chill out for a bit. Plus, I already told you we could not make her Luna. We have to protect the pack."
"The goddess made her our mate for a reason, and if you do not claim her, someone else will," he replied.
This pissed me off. Claim what's mine? No, I think not. Wait, she is not mine. I do not care who claims her.
"Dax, the goddess, will give us a second chance, I know it. I will not claim her as ours, end of discussion." I could tell Dax was pissed. He flashed his canines and cut off our connection. He was acting like a child. He should be honest with himself. Layla was a better choice, even though I felt nothing for her. She was strong, fast, and intelligent. I've decided to claim her now that I know my mate is some weak, fickle, blind chick, but I can't tell Dax that. I will mark her randomly. I know she won't mind because she has already asked me several times to do so. Dax will just have to live with it.
Opening the door to my office, I could smell Layla's and Don's scents.
"What do you guys want?" I ask, sounding annoyed.
"Who was that girl?" Layla asked.
"Girl?" Don raised his eyebrows.
"Oh, you didn't hear. Max came into the packhouse with a cute little girl in his arms. He looked very concerned, scared even." Layla stared at me with irritation.
"What? Dude, for real?"
"I don't have time right now. We are preparing for the festival. Is there something I can do for you both?"
"Well, I finished guard duty and looked for Nina, but I couldn't find her. Have you seen her by chance?" Don asked. But hearing his concern for her put me on edge.
"Why are you looking for her? If she is working, won't you just be getting in the way?" I could feel my body on fire as I responded.
"I just want to wish her a happy birthday" Don looked confused.
"Do I look like her keeper? I have already done enough helping her after she passed out..." damn, why did I have to say that? Now I know he will say something that will piss me off, but I have to keep my cool otherwise, they will start to suspect me.
"Oh, the girl you helped out was Don's fling, the little blind girl? Now I understand." Layla giggled.
"Wait, she passed out. Where? When? He asked, rushing to me.
"I found her this morning when I was headed to the store," I lied.
"Where is she now? Is she okay? Why didn't you tell me? You know how I feel about her."
"She is resting in MY room right now, and I didn't know I had to report anything to you," I said, walking closer and looking firmly into his eyes. I needed to cool off. Dax was aura was surpassing mine.
"Sorry, Alpha. I just feel like this is my fault because I was supposed to pick her up this morning but didn't. Is she okay?"
"Yes, she has a slight heatstroke and is a bit malnourished. She will be fi...'" He left before I could finish my sentence.
"Wow, he must have the hots for her." Layla teased.
"Babe, do you need help winding down?" she said, placing her hand on the back of my hair. Her actions made my stomach twist and bile rise in the back of my throat.
"Not now, Layla; I am swamped and stressed about tonight. We have many other packs coming in less than 4 hours. I need to make sure everything is ready". I replied, pushing her back and grabbing the pile of pack work I had on my desk.
"When I become your Luna, this will be much easier because I will handle everything. Well, I will see you tonight, cowboy," she said as she left my office. As soon as the door shut, my mind drifted back to Nina. I will reject her as soon as she feels better. Rejections take a lot out of a wolf and could possibly kill one. I don't want her to die, but I also don't want her period. I can't stand the feelings I have towards her. It's taking everything I have not to run back upstairs to hold her. Ugh, I am ready for the day to be over.
Don's POV>
I ran to the kitchen, grabbed the first thing I could see: a banana, some apples, and some water, and ran upstairs as soon as he told me about her condition. Now, what do I do? I'm standing outside the door, confused. What if she hates me now? What if she thinks I did it on purpose? Here goes nothing. I knock on the door and hear no reply. I knock again, and nothing. What if she passed out again? What if she needs help. I have no choice but to let myself in. As soon as I turn the knob, I see a tired-looking Nina sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Coming to make fun of me?" Nina asked, facing the floor.
"I would never. I am so sorry about this morning; I was told to ru..."
"It's okay. It was my fault for accepting your offer. I'm sure you have more important things to do than pick up the blind chick. But it's not your fault that I collapsed. So please don't feel bad." She didn't sound angry but sad and defeated. It hurt seeing her like this. I barely knew this girl, but she tugged at my heart as if I always knew her.
"I promise I did not leave you on purpose. I had last-minute pack duties that I had to take care of, and I didn't have your phone number, and I couldn't mindlink you because we have not had the ceremony for the new wolves just yet. I am so sorry. I heard you might be hungry, so I brought you a snack. I know you might be mad at me but at least eat this." I handed her the banana and apple and glanced at her face. Her smile lit me up with joy.
"Honestly, I thought you might be my mate since I felt a connection with you almost immediately, but even though I know you are not, I am still thrilled to see you, Nina." Her face went flush, and it made me smile.
"Ummm... Thank you for the food. I will enjoy it and head downstairs right after." She said with a shaky voice.
I turned around and walked towards the door when she said, " I wish you were my mate too.". This set me in overdrive. I opened the door as my heart melted. Tonight was going to be a great night.
