Vaughna

I opened my eyes and saw a white ceiling. I’m lying in a bed and I looked at my body that’s wrapped in a white blanket. I could hear someone but I couldn’t really say if it is a human, an angel or any creature. Where am I? I tried to get up but someone came and held my shoulder. I looked at the owner of the hand and was shocked to see a man. His eyes are in deep shade of brown. He has long lashes and thick brows that accented his expressive eyes. I have never seen a nose as perfect as his is and his lips are thin and pursed in a grim line. And with a cutting jaw like that, his face is definitely one top in the human race. “Don’t move yet,” he told me in a worried voice. I looked at him and blinked. “Who are you?” I asked him. He narrowed his eyes at me, his jaw ticking. “You fell from the sky and landed on my rooftop,” he told me in a whisper. My eyes widened as my head ached with a flash of memory. “Vaughna, I’m going to need you to go down and help people if you don’t stop breaking the rules of the Paradise,” The Power told me when he met me after my punishment. I was caught wandering the vast lands of the Paradise at curfew and using my powers to teleport back to my room in no time. The Power fixed his long white hair and stood up from his throne. “That is going to be your punishment,” he said in a firm voice. I shook my head, vehemently disagreeing. “I’m sorry! I will not break any rule from now on!” I kneeled down in front of him. I heard him clearing his throat. “You have multiple offenses, Vaughna. I could already write a whole book with your offenses in it.” I looked at him and frowned. I admit that I am not the most obedient angel but I am definitely not the worst. But then again, the worst of us, Clement, is already deployed and currently wandering around the Earth. The Power snapped his fingers and the next thing I know, I am already dressed in a white long-sleeved dress. My wings are gone. “The Power!” I cried. “I promise to do better!” I sobbed. Tears fell to my cheeks before diamonds hit the floor. I heard a deep sigh from the Power. I know that he is merciful so I think crying will help. “Your wings will be invisible from now on but you will retain your memory and your powers,” he started. I opened my mouth to utter a word of rebut but he silenced me. “You are allowed to use your powers to help people. But you shouldn’t use your powers against humans. There are lots of things you have to know about the Earth, Vaughna. And I’m sure those things will help you become a better angel before you get your designated human to guide.” I swallowed hard. “How will I come back?” I asked him. I’m going to do my best to go back here as soon as possible. He smiled at me. “When you’ve changed a human’s life…and yes, that’s what you’re going to accomplish while you stay there. You’ll get a bonus back here the more lives you change.” I opened my mouth to retaliate but The Power snapped his fingers and without further ado, I fell into a deep slumber. But it was not just a normal slumber. I looked at the man in front of me. He’s claiming that I fell from the sky. Does that mean, I literally fell from the sky? How could the The Power let one of his angels to fall from the sky? That’s extremely dangerous! I rose to sit up and this human helped me. My whole body is aching and that’s because The Power merciless— I stopped on my thoughts and recalled what He told me. I need to change lives of people. I turned to the man in front of me again. His eyes are looking so worried as he studied me from head to foot. I fell on his rooftop. He’s the first one who saw me…so does that mean, I need to help this handsome man? A mild ache crossed my head and I could feel the window opening with a strong gush of the wind. The human turned to the window with wide eyes. He walked to it and began to close it but he couldn’t.   I sighed and realized that I have carelessly used my power. Vaughna, calm down. I shouldn’t be destroying windows on Earth. I massaged my temple. “Where am I?” I asked him. He turned to me with his eyes narrowed. He c****d his head to the side. “You’re at the hospital,” he said. “Miss, did you really fall from the sky?” he asked, as if confirming what he just saw. I inwardly rolled my eyes. “I didn’t,” I replied. The Power would understand my white lies, wouldn’t he? After all, he let a human see me fall from The Paradise. The human’s eyes looked at me suspiciously. Human nature. Always suspecting anything. But could I blame him? He saw an almost impossible thing. “I’m pretty sure I own one of the highest building in this city and you landed on the rooftop,” he uttered. I narrowed my eyes at him and tried to read what he’s thinking. “She’s lying.” “I’m not lying,” I replied and he narrowed his eyes at him even more. I mentally scolded myself for answering his thoughts. Now he’s even more suspicious. “Is she an angel?” My eyes widened. How did he know? He sighed and pursed his lips in a thin line. “The doctor said you don’t have any broken bones. You’re probably just exhausted,” he told me. “She’s definitely not human.” I smiled awkwardly. I’m sure he knows that I am not a human. “Thank you,” I replied. He nodded. “Anyway, where’s your address?” he asked, trying to make me think that he’s already given up of the premise that I am an angel. Address? I looked around the room as my mind starts to panic. What address? I don’t have one! But that would be weird if I don’t have one. He’d only think I am not human. My lips trembled. Come on, Vaughna. Find an excuse! You can even find an excuse in front of The Power all the time. Finding an excuse in front of this human is no big deal! “Miss?” the man asked again. I looked at him and bit my lower lip. “I…I c-can’t remember,” I stuttered. The human raised his brow at me, the side of his lips rising in a smirk. What do I do now? Do I delete his memories? Do I manipulate it? I mean, I haven’t done that before since I don’t think I need to do so but I surely can do that. He stared at me sternly before letting out a deep sigh. “You told me you’re Vaughna and you need my help before you fainted,” he started. “Now you don’t remember where you live?” I nodded. It sounds ridiculous, I know. “You’re an angel, aren’t you?” he asked, sounding so sure about it. My eyes widened at him. “H-how…” I couldn’t speak. This human has successfully rendered me speechless. But then his eyes also widened. “You are?” he asked again. But this time, he’s shocked. I pouted before slowly nodding. “Do you have powers?” he asked me, amused. He even sat on the edge of the bed. I blinked and nodded. “Can you show it to me?” he sounds so interested. I shook my head. If he knew my powers, he’d be greedy. I know humans are greedy. They want something and when they finally get it, they’d want more. I’m not falling for that. He sighed, looking so disappointed. He was silent for a few moments before he smiled at me. “You can stay at my place, Vaughna.” “I need to get her to trust me.” Yes, sure. He needs to work for him to gain my trust. “I’ll pay for your bills.” “What’s the catch?” I asked. He shrugged. “Nothing much,” he said, his eyes are solely on me before letting out a smile. “Do angels really cry diamonds?”
