He faced Mr. Warlingham as he stood on the hearth and he was so near to Caroline that she could have put out her hand and touched him. “Well, Gervase,” Lord Brecon said in level tones. “What is it you are going to tell me?” “Now that you are here, Vane,” Mr. Warlingham said, “I remember that there is no reason after all to inform you of something which is actually a secret between La – Miss Fry and myself. You will forgive me if I leave you, for I recall that I am engaged for the next dance.” He turned and walked quickly, towards the further door of the room. Lord Brecon watched him go.
