“That is what I wanted,” Julia replied. “Now I wish to show the Captain your houses and after that perhaps your wives will bring up the treasures you are going to put into this hole as I don’t think it need be any deeper.”
She looked at the Captain as she spoke.
“It is deep enough now,” he said, “because they would have to cover it if the Viking ships were on the horizon. If they had had to get away before they arrived, the hole would have to be filled up and not appear as a dip in the very centre of The Castle.”
“We should all bring our goods here at twelve o’clock,” Julia said. “Then someone can make a list of what is being put into the hole. You must all concentrate on making sure that no one can get into The Castle except through the main door and pay.”
