A dog barked nearby, joined by another, and a man and woman began a furious, foul-mouthed argument that wakened half the street. Smith walked on, lengthening his stride, and swinging his cane. He stopped to peer into a shop window and listened but heard no other footsteps. Have I lost him? Or is he watching from a distance? Have I lost him?
