What annoyed Alice the most about the whole announcement ordeal was far more wolves obeyed him instantly than she'd ever manage. Why had the Goddess given her such a strange mate?
"I don't think they'll give you any more issues," Harris pointed out with a grin.
"I can handle my pack on my own, I don't need you stepping in. I'm an Alpha."
"Oh," Harris winced. "I guess that does look like I was trying to take over, huh? I'm sorry. That was not my intention. I just never want anyone to ever insult you again in your life. You're too precious to me."
Alice looked away. The moon was close to dipping below the horizon and the sun would greet them soon. "Just stay out of my affairs. I can handle this."
"I have every faith," he answered as he licked her ear.
Alice resisted the urge to bite him. She didn't need her wolf making her suffer over something like this. And so she let herself be licked. "I want you and your wolves out of my territory, right now. I'm going back to go rest."
"Excellent, I'll go with you. I'm eager to see our new place." Harris was right behind her again.
"I'm not sharing my house with you," Alice said instantly. No way was she going to let this creature close to her Justa.
Well, he wasn't hers any longer, but she'd still protect him no matter what.
"You can move in with me then. It's whatever you wish, my love." Harris smiled at her as he kissed her cheek. "I can't stand to be without you. It's as if my fur is being ripped off chunk by chunk."
Her wolf was jumping for joy at this declaration. She wanted to sleep next to this wolf that very day. "You can't."
"Then like I said, you come with me. I won't let anything happen to you. Please? I just want to rest by your side."
Alice scowled. "We'll go to the woods. We'll leave the rest of the pack behind until we get back. I don't want to give either side leverage right now."
"The woods?" Harris's grin grew. "Yes! I love that!" His tail wagged hard and he crouched as he smiled up at her. "This has been the best news of my life!"
"Alpha," Sucrose mumbled again. Both wolves turned to study her. "What should the rest of us do?"
"Make yourself at home," Alice answered. How much of a fool was she? Her wolf would never let this other wolf go.
It didn't matter if she didn't want it if she didn't like it. She was stuck with her mate.
She knew all too well what would happen if she rejected him, and she didn't know if she could endure all of it. "Let me tend to matters first, and I'll meet you right here."
"I'll go with you," Harris offered. "I want to see where you live if it matches someone as amazing as you."
"No!" The word flew from Alice's mouth before she could stop it.
Harris's eyes narrowed but he nodded. "Very well. I'll wait right here for you. You won't make me wait too long now, will you?"
And have him invade her home finding out about Justa? Harris didn't seem the heartless and brutal type, but Alice wasn't about to take a chance. Not with Justa's life in any case.
"Alpha, what are you going to do about your pet now that you have a proper mate?" the mocking voice came from the wolf that Alice had taught the lesson.
Alice should have killed her.
"Pet?" Harris tilted his head as he turned to the wolf. "What kind of pet does my love have? I'm curious about what could capture her interest."
"Oh, she has the most interesting pet," the other wolf continued with a chuckle. "Our little Alpha bagged herself a human."
"Human?" His eyes narrowed as his body tensed. "You must be joking." There was a golden flame in his eyes.
A flame that made Alice sweat. "The human is of no concern to anyone else. He's mine."
"He's yours alright, we've heard the sounds coming from your house. That's why I'm asking what you're going to do with him now. There's no way you can keep him now that you have a mate."
"My pet is leaving tomorrow." She would make that wolf suffer a long drawn out death for doing this to her.
"I would like to meet this pet of yours, love."
Alice did not trust this wolf at all. Her wolf might be willing to go along with the request, but she wasn't. "There's no need. Now that I've found my mate I have no need for a pet to entertain me. I'll be taking care of him tomorrow."
"I can take care of him right now for you," Harris offered with a soft chuckle. "Humans are good for one thing at least, they are delicious."
Alice growled. "Back off," she ordered. "The human is mine to handle, not yours. He's not to be touched by anyone in my pack, or yours."
Harris shook his head and the golden light faded. "As you wish, love. I'm sorry, I misunderstood the human's purpose for you. I won't stand in your way of taking him to safety. I could escort you if you like."
"No need," Alice answered. "I'm more than enough to handle anything that comes my way."
She'd ask Mark to come with her in case these wolves of his decided to disobey. She could handle them, but she didn't want to risk Justa's safety.
"As you wish. In any case, please hurry. I'm looking forward to spending a night alone with you."
Funny, Alice was dreading it on her end.
"Stay here, don't disobey me this time."
Harris licked her cheek again. "I'll stay here until your return, I'd never dream of disappointing you again."
Alice fought the urge to roll her eyes. Her wolf wanted her to return the affection, but she couldn't even imagine doing something like that.
Besides, she'd be spending more than enough time with him today. She wasn't stupid, she knew what would happen when they were alone. Her wolf would take control and the result would be a mating.
Alice entered her tunnels and shifted letting her clothes form around her once more. This time she settled for something easy to move in. She got to the kitchen and the aroma filled every inch of her house.
Her mouth watered at the delectable scents. But what was most surprising was that it wasn't Justa who was cooking. Mark was bent over the stove frying the chicken and making the most delicious scents.
"Is it handled?" Justa questioned.
"I have to leave until tonight," Alice answered with a soft sigh. "I won't be back until the moon is high in the sky. I'll come to get you then and take you to the other humans at that time, Justa."
"You're leaving me alone for the rest of the day?" Justa chuckled a wry harsh sound. "Why not just let me go home now? Mark could take me. It's not like you need to see me off. I'm not your pet any longer."
Mark's ears turned red but the man didn't stop his chef pursuits as he continued to cook. "Whatever you decide, Alpha. You know who I owe my loyalty to."
Alice glared at Justa. She imagined herself forming another chain and tying this defiant beast up. "As long as you're under this roof, Justa, you are mine. I'll be back tonight to handle you."
"No," Justa replied in almost the same breath. "Mark is going to escort me back. I don't want to get in the way of you and your mate, Alpha. Congratulations on finding who your Goddess has found fit to match you with forever.
His words were brittle, his eyes dark and narrowed on her. What right did he have to be mad with her? She didn't want this! "Justa, you're going to stay here."
"No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are!"
"Mark, please tell your Alpha that you'll be taking me home after you finish cooking." Justa requested.
"Mark," Alice growled with a warning.
Mark glanced over his shoulder at them. A red streak covered the bridge of his nose. "Alpha, you know I respect you. You know that you can order me to do anything and I'll do it. But, this is another matter. You have a mate now. I would be stupid to help you fight against that. You know the consequences."
Justa glanced from one to the other. The deep lines etched in his face had faded away. "What consequences? Why do I get the feeling that you're not telling me everything?"
Mark didn't give Alice a chance to reply, he did. "If a wolf rejects their mate it's akin to abandoning your wolf entirely. It could kill her."
