Five: Alpha's Battle

1770 Words
The rest of her pack stood in a loose circle around the dirt arena. They sat on the ground or stood, waiting for the outcome. Alice would deal with them later. She kept her eyes on Jared as the man moved around. He drug his right leg with every third step as he circled her. "Your time for lording over all of us is over," he sneered. Alice rolled her eyes. "Are you having fun grandstanding, Jared?" Instead of answering her, he crouched to the ground his fingers tracing the dirt beneath. Alice shook her head and jumped backward as a spire or earth appeared from where she stood. "Really?" she demanded with a toss of her long black hair. "You plan to try these same tired tricks on me?" She gestured at him with a sideways sweep of her hand and a burst of wind erupted and slammed into Jared. The other wolf grunted at the attack but held his ground. He thrust his own hand out and a wall of dirt stretched in front of him. Her wind attack made the shield bulge, but not give in. Alice chuckled. "So an old dog can learn a new trick." She smirked. "Unfortunately for you, I have more than that to deal with you." She changed her sideways gesture to a downward one and a halo of wind appeared above Jared and slammed him into the ground. Alice watched as the wind curved the man prone before her until he was bowing. "I like that look better, Jared. You ready to give up?" "Not yet," Jared thrust his fist into the ground and the dirt exploded around him as he used it to fight back against her own power.  Alice lifted a slim brow. "You're doing better than last time. But don't think you'll be able to beat the Alpha of this pack so easily." She let the power of the wind flood out of her as she searched for the next compatible element. Fire wasn't her forte, it wasn't a friend like wind, but it could still be useful. Sparks of flames sprung to life around Jared and circled him like a collar of flame.  Sweat trickled down Jared's cheeks and his eyes shifted from side to side. He licked his lips and his dirt shields fell to the side. Drops of water appeared and circled around him.  To Alice's eyes, he looked like a sprinkler. The tiny drops weren't enough to drown her small flames and the fires grew as they increased in size. Alice bit her lip so hard her teeth split her lip. The blood was refreshing, but it broke her concentration. The flames died out and vanished in a puff. Her body was covered in sticky sweat and her limbs trembled from the overuse. She grunted and pulled herself together. She'd have time to be exhausted after this battle. Alice bolted straight at Jared. The water fell to the ground as he lifted his arms in a cross to catch her charge. She ran into him full tilt but instead of knocking him over, she only managed to force him back a step. Her fist flashed as she aimed for his gut, but he dropped both arms down and she winced as her knuckle met metal and her bones screamed at the defense. Alice hissed as she took a step back. Jared laughed at her. A mocking gleam reflecting in his eyes. "What's the matter? 'he demanded with his arms spread wide. "Done already? Ready to submit?" Alice rolled her eyes. From the corner of them, she saw Justa leaning forward as he watched. His eyes were focused on her and it made her glow inside. She liked his attention. Those eyes of his so focused on her made her insides twist and heat.   Jared's fist plowed into the side of her face. Alice was thrown backward but caught herself before she lost her feet. She thrust her hand at Jared's middle and her faithful companion of the wind slammed into his gut and he doubled over. Alice wasted no time as she drove her knee into his face. His nose broke and sprayed blood as he staggered back. He held a hand to the injury and growled at her as tears sparkled in the corners of his eyes. "b***h!" Alice merely smiled in reply. She didn't waste time. She dropped to the ground and kicked out with her leg to sweep out Jared's legs from beneath him. The man jumped over them and his own hand shot out, burying itself in Alice's hair. He yanked with all his might and Alice found herself with her toes brushing the ground. His other hand curled around her throat and squeezed. Alice's heart slammed against her ribs. She forced her breath to calm down into even and focused puffs. The chain that kept her hair free from her face wrapped around Jared's fingers and he tried to yank his hold away. The chains dug into his flesh as they wound round and round, imprisoning him.  The hand around her throat tightened more. Alice couldn't draw another breath. Instead of fear, her eyes flashed in defiance and blue sparks traveled up and down the chain. Jared screamed as the electricity surged through his body. He let his hold go and the chain retracted straight back into Alice's hair arrangement. Jared wasn't laughing anymore. Instead, he cradled his bleeding and smoking hand to his chest and growled at her. As he stared at her a slow smirk spread across his lips and he laughed. "You wasted too much time, Alpha," he mocked. Alice glanced from his smile to the sky around them. Gone were the brilliant reds and yellows. It had turned dark and their moon was rising. Her beast inside shoved at her skin. She wanted to shift and give way to her stronger self. And yet, she wanted to torture Jared more. She wanted to wipe that smirk off his lips for good. And she was enjoying that light of appreciation in her pet's eyes. That surprise and admiration stirred her beast more than anything else. Human or not, her wolf wanted him, and not as a pet, but as a potential mate. Alice shoved the thoughts to the deepest corner she could muster as she marched on Jared. He was on all fours already, his skin writhed like snakes were struggling beneath it to break free.  He would shift soon. She took her foot, willed some of the power that languished in her chain, and kicked him straight in the jaw. The former Alpha fell over like a domino and screeched as he held his face. The transformation that had been flowing through him, faded away as his humanoid form rolled side to side and whimpered. "Mercy!" he screamed as she raised her foot to stomp on him. Alice glared down at him but put her foot back on the ground. "Know your place, Jared," she growled at him as her eyes flashed. Her beast demanded so much more from her. It wanted her to hold him to the ground and force him to submit fully. But she didn't want to do that right now. All Alice wanted to do was turn around and return to this mysterious pet of hers. Why was her wolf so insistent on making him theirs? Why did she want to throw all of her rules and foundations out of the window just to experience what his skin would be like beneath hers? She turned to talk to him. The howl by her ears forced her to clamp her hands over them. Fangs bit into her tender ankle and she grunted as Jared grabbed her mid-shift and flung her to the side. As he approached her, the rest of his transformation finished and the shaggy silver wolf stared down at her bared his teeth in a challenge. "I never conceded. You should have been smarter than that, Alpha." Alice's body was still drained from the magic she'd used. Her own transformation still simmered beneath the surface. It would be easy to summon her wolf and fight but she wanted to teach him not to mess with her in any form. The lightning surged through her body one last time and the chains parted from her collar and wrapped around the neck of the rival wolf. Her fingers jerked in rhythm to the shaking of Jared's body but all too soon the power faded as her body ran out of steam. Her hand fell to her side and she collapsed to the ground. She let the change flow over her as her bones swelled and shifted into place. The clothes that she had shifted into before were reabsorbed by her skin and when the transformation was done she stood with a snarl to her lips. There was no need for her to growl outright, she was the leader and had no plans of giving it up. Jared leaped at her his muzzle a mask of rage. His eyes glowed with a light of insanity. Alice waited until he was almost on her before she sidestepped and whirled around until she was biting hard into his flank. Jared yelped as he tried to shake her off but Alice hung on. Her teeth sank into his flesh. He begged for mercy again, but this time Alice didn't give. Her jaws clenched tighter and Jared yelped as he pulled himself away leaving a patch of flesh in his wake. The other wolves glanced at each other. The Alpha didn't normally press fights so hard. "We need to call this," one whispered to another. But whisper as they would, none of them were willing to stand up and stop her. Instead, they huddled together in their circle and just watched. Blood gushed from Jared's wound and he continued to back away with a whimper. Alice stood over him. "Do you yield?" she growled. Only sheer force of will kept her from collapsing. She'd pushed herself beyond her normal limits, but she wouldn't reveal that. Jared turned his head to the side and shuddered as he revealed his vulnerable throat. Alice waited until he ran off with his tail between his legs before she faced her pack. She sat down and thew her head back in a victorious howl before staring each and every one of them down. "Does anyone else wish to challenge me or my decisions?" she demanded. One by one they shook their heads and knelt, their bellies hugging the ground. They held their head to the sides exposing their vulnerability and revealed that once again Alice was the Alpha. Alice strode to where Justa waited, grabbed his chain with her mouth, and drug him after her. She'd deal with the pack and the traitors inside later. For now, her beast wanted some one on one time with this human.
