"Shouldn't we eat breakfast before we do this?" Justa demanded with a scowl on his lips, his bruised lips.
Alice hid her smile. Every mark she left on him made her proud. She didn't need a mate, at this point, she didn't care if one showed up.
All she needed, no, all she wanted was Justa. "We'll eat when we're done."
They hadn't run into anyone else yet, but it was only a matter of time. Alice had made the patrol as early as possible and even delayed her breakfast, but she had no doubts.
As if in answer to her thoughts a branch snapped up ahead and the dark wolf stalked toward them. He bowed his head upon seeing her but his lips lifted Justa's way.
"Mark," Alice warned putting a growl to her voice.
The wolf dipped his head again. "Sorry." He sniffed the air and shook his head hard. "Are you sure it's wise? Parts of the pack won't accept this."
Alice waved the matter away. "I'm not afraid to show them whose pack this is. I should have run out Jared's leftovers when I took over."
"I'll be by your side, Alpha," Mark shook his head. "But for now I'll continue on my patrol. If you need my assistance, just howl."
Justa stayed silent throughout the meeting but once Mark was out of range he nodded towards the direction the wolf had retreated. "Trouble in paradise, Alpha?"
"Nothing you have to worry about. You're not getting tired yet, are you? My territory stretches awhile yet."
"Tired?" Justa's lips twitched and he ran a hand through his hair. His muscles rippled with the action and Alice forgot how to breathe.
How could a human be this gorgeous? It didn't make sense.
"I thought I already proved to you what kind of stamina I have, Alice," he almost whispered the last word.
Alice's legs clenched. She wanted to throw him against an available tree and mount him then and there. She shook her head to rid herself of the urges. She had to be in control.
Besides, there would be time to f**k him silly later. There would be plenty of time for that.
Control. She had to have it, she would show it. "You can remind of that later. For now, we have a border to handle."
Justa shrugged but followed after her an annoyingly smug smile firmly etched on his lips.
She'd make sure to handle that too. The man wouldn't be able to get away with that superior look for much longer.
As they walked through the woods the leaves crackled beneath them. The moon was high in the sky and Alice lifted her face toward it. Being a human like this during this time was far too odd.
They left the safety of the woods and came out into the plains. A group of wolves stood waiting for them, three large ones leading the pack.
"Traitor!" one growled.
"Filthy," the biggest one sneered as it sat down and glared at them. "You're running around in the guise of a human? You stink of it too. A pet is one thing, but allowing it to mate with you? What kind of Alpha are you?"
Alice snarled. She wanted nothing more than to shift and tear these vermin apart. The only thing that stopped her was she didn't want Justa to see her solve every issue with violence.
Besides, she needed to prove a point. She crossed her arms over chest as she walked over to them with her head held high. "I don't even need to shift to handle the lot of you. Maybe you forgot what I'm capable of, but I can gladly refresh your memory."
Justa watched from behind, the man didn't even stop smiling. "I'll let you handle this. I'm assuming they are unhappy with me."
"If you want to be a human lover so much, you need to leave this pack. I don't care if you're the Alpha. You don't deserve to be here. They're filthy, brutal, heartless monsters. The only good human is a dead human."
Alice rolled her eyes. "Are you done?"
True, some of that rhetoric she'd spouted herself in the past, but humans had far more layers than she'd given credit.
At least hers did. "Say what you will about other humans, but this one is mine. You won't insult him in front of me like this."
"Just leave and die. We don't want you or it here. You won't even shift into your real form to have this conversation. It just shows you're not fit for the position."
"You three are Jared's little cultists. I spared your lives, and you're repaying me by giving me speeches that sound like they come from a human."
She paused and glanced over her shoulder. "Present company excluded." At least he didn't understand her, she didn't want to insult him.
"Cultist?" The wolf that had been sitting got to her feet and padded over. "Take that back or I'll rip your throat out, Alpha," she crooned.
"No," Alice replied. The wind was still lost to her. The only magic that was around was water and ice and she wasn't an expert with those.
However, she wasn't about to back down to someone that had essentially been a servant of the former Alpha's.
The wolf sprung like a too tightly coiled spring.
Alice dropped to the ground and summoned a blade of ice in her hand. She stuck her hand with the blade up and let it pierce through and slide like butter through her attacker's side.
The woman gasped as she finished her jump and stumbled as blood poured from her wounds.
"You won't die, but next time I won't be so gentle," Alice cautioned as she pointed her blade at the others. "Does anyone else think this form isn't powerful enough to go up against you?"
Ice had been the right choice, it didn't take a lot of magic to form the blade, and it was easy to use. Wind might be her favorite, but it was a pain to channel.
Then again its difficulty was why she was the only one that could control it in the pack.
The other wolves growls had died out. They formed a ring around their injured member and as she walked by they shied away with heads down and whimpers.
Good.
"Come on, Justa," she ordered.
He followed her but the smile was gone from his lips now. Instead, a thin hard line had replaced it.
"Hurry," Alice snapped again. She was tired of this bullshit. Grabbing Justa's arm she dragged him after her.
Their patrol was over.
This was more important to her. She lugged him to the center where the dirt ring still stood and raising her head she howled.
Her wind magic wasn't around so it wasn't as strong as her normal call to assembly, and even weaker considering she was in humanoid form. But the only thing that mattered to her was that her pack listened.
One by one they showed up. The first group was the wolves she'd taken care of that had dared to fight with her. Following them was Mark and as he scented the females he snarled and bit one hard on the flank. She whimpered and dragged her belly to the dirt.
The rest were slower, but her pack showed up.
"As you can see I'm in my humanoid form, despite the moon being so high." Alice spread her arms wide and held Justa's arm as she did so. "If you think this makes me weak, say it to me now. Don't hide behind the words of others."
The wolves glanced at each other.
Mark stood and walked toward her. He shifted into his human form too and his clothes too formed instantly on his muscular body.
It did amuse her that some of the females whined as the black leather formed around him.
"Alpha, tell me what happened. I'll make an example out of anyone and everyone that dared to speak to you like that."
His eyes narrowed on the three again. "Starting with Jared's bitches."
"They're not mine," Jared replied. He stayed a wolf. He made a spot on the ground and sat down. "You can do whatever you want to them. I wouldn't dream of going against you no matter what form you're in, Alpha."
He chuckled and placed his muzzle on his paws. "I learned that lesson."
Alice didn't trust him. He could say all that, but it didn't mean any of it was true. He'd be the first to sink a blade in her back when she turned and wrest control of the pack from her.
"Shut up, Dad," Mark growled at him. "Who else dares to challenge her? I'll fight in her stead."
"No, if they think they can take me, I'll take them all on." Alice's eyes scanned the crowd. Most wolves wouldn't meet her eyes. Only a handful did and those were eyes full of hate.
But not enough to come forward and defend what they felt was such an onslaught to the pack.
"The Moon Goddess will always stand by those in the right. You've all witnessed how she's chosen me over Jared. If you want to defy her will, I'm ready to beat it into your heads at any time."
The group of wolves that had shot her defiant looks left in a group with their tails down and straight into the forest.
A deep rumble erupted from Mark's chest. "Should I go after them?" he demanded.
"No," Alice waved off his worry with a shake of her head. "They're not important. I have an announcement though."
Alice grabbed Justa once more and pulled him into the very center. "I'm mating with this human, no, he's not my mate, but he's mine. If anyone has any problems with that, come forward now. I'll be gentle in my teaching if you are honest with me. If you try to hide it and stop me later, I'll kill you."
Justa frowned at her words but didn't comment. He just crossed his arms over his chest and watched.
Well, there were ways to get that glower off of his lips. "Since no one wants to come forward, I don't want to hear a word when you hear the moans and howls coming from my house. What I do with my pet is my business."
She grabbed Justa by the nape of his neck. His eyes flashed at a promise of what shed receive for this treatment but she didn't care.
Alice was frustrated, and she was going to go take it out on some random pieces of furniture. She'd fix breakfast after a nice long f**k.
Her whole body quivered at just the thought of it as she marched the human in front of her and back into her home.
Playtime was about to begin.
