Chapter 5
Only here it was, next week, and I wouldn’t be having dinner with him, I’d be going home. Scott was taking his last final and hadn’t returned to our room yet, so I’d take advantage of his absence to call Ham. This wasn’t a call I wanted my nosy roommate to eavesdrop on.
I still had my cell phone out, and I dialed the number.
And Ham knew it was me, even before I’d said a word.
“Hello, blue eyes.” God, I did love when he called me that.
“Hi, Ham.”
“Are we still on for tomorrow night?”
“I’m afraid not. I’ve been called home on family business.”
“I hope it’s nothing serious?”
“My father needs me.” I couldn’t help the pride in my voice.
“Your father? May I ask why?”
“Of course, but I can’t tell you. I have no idea,” I hurried to assure him. And while Ms. Clive had said something regarding a merger, I knew enough to keep my mouth shut about it. “I…I’m really sorry I have to break our date. I was looking forward to it.”
“As was I.”
“May I have a rain check?”
“Of course, Kipp. A bientôt.”
Soon? Was that the best I could hope for? I guessed so. “A bientôt, Ham.” I waited for him to disconnect the call.
“Kipp.”
“Yes?”
“I am sorry you had to cancel, and I will see you soon.”
“I won’t be leaving until tomorrow morning. Could you meet me for dinner this evening? My treat,” I wheedled. “T.G.I.Friday’s has the best loaded potato skins.”
He laughed. “As tempting as that sounds, I’m afraid not. I need to finish firming up a business deal. And regrettably, I’m not in town.”
“Damn. I’d better let you go.” Was this the way all our phone conversations were going to end?
“I’ll talk to you soon. Dream of me tonight, blue eyes.”
“Will you dream of me?”
“Don’t doubt it. I’ve been losing sleep because of you.”
“Are you trying to make me come in my jeans again?” Oh, my God, had I actually said that?
Fortunately, he didn’t question me on it. He just chuckled and said, “Goodbye, Kipp.”
“Bye, Ham.” I hit END and…
Hunter! I had to call Hunter, too, to let him know I wouldn’t be coming in anymore.
