Prologue
"So did you find her?" asked a voice I recognized, even I still couldn't put a name to it.
"Yes, we did, it wasn't easy you know?"
"Well, it took you three years to do it, so I really hope there was a good excuse for not bringing her before. Where is she?" The door opened and I saw the face of the man who called himself the leader of our people. I hated him before, and I hated him know, he was everything that was wrong with our people, and the reason I had run away. "Welcome home," he said with what looked like a welcoming smile.
"This is not my home, and I want to go," I demanded, trying to at least appear strong.
"I'm sorry, but that is not an option. At first I thought you would do what was necessary for your people, I even offered to let you choose the man you wanted to be with. All I needed from you was a few cubs to preserve our species."
"You wanted to breed me, without care for my feelings!" I couldn't help but scream, not that it helped.
"Well, and how did running away worked for you?" he asked evilly. "You are back where you started, only in a worse condition. I'm no longer willing to try and ease your feelings, now I only care about results. We have decided you no longer have a choice. You will be auctioned among the wealthy families of our kind. What they do with you once they get you, I don't care, as long as they force you to produce at least five cubs in the next ten years. Do you understand what you did to yourself? You no longer get to decide who will sire your cubs."
"You can't do that to me! I'm a person, I have rights!" I shouted, hoping someone would hear me and come help me, but knowing it was a long shot.
"This is for the good of our people. The others clans are growing, there are even more bears than mountain lions now. If we want to survive, we have to make sacrifices, and since you are not willing to do it for your people, on your own free will, then I fear we will have to make some hard choices for you."
"I won't allow this! You can't do this to me!"
"Just watch me," he mocked me. "Get her ready. Make sure she is wearing the clothes I prepared for her, I don't care if you have to dress her yourself, just make sure she is presentable and ready for the auction," he ordered the man as he walked outside.
"So what is it going to do gorgeous? Are you going to change by yourself like a good girl? Or do you want me to play dress up with you?"
I knew I had no choice, I went to the closet and got the dress out. I wanted to go to the bathroom to have some privacy, but the man moved in front of the door.
"Sorry, I can't let you out of my sight. You can turn your back on me, but I need to be able to see you," the guy said, and I knew by his face that I wouldn't be able to convince him otherwise, he was not going to leave me alone for even a second.
I swallowed my humiliation and changed into the dress. It was way too revealing, and I wanted to cry, but I decided I wouldn't let them see me defeated. I wasn't going to let them do this to me, I was going to find a way to escape. I had done it once before and I would do it again.
To think that only a week earlier, I had been living my life. Granted, I had been just a lowly waitress at the fringe of wolf territory, but at least I had been free. I would have given anything to go back to that life.
