Chapter FiveLucy, who was a very pretty girl, walked up to the piano where Vanola was playing. “’Is nibs wants the Polka!” “Not again!” Vanola exclaimed. “That’s what ’e wants,” Lucy said, “and ’ere you are, for your trouble.” She put half a sovereign down on the end of the keyboard and Vanola just glanced at it before she started playing. The first night at Kate Hamilton’s she had not understood that when a customer asked for a certain tune he was expected to pay for it. In fact everything at Kate’s was extra. Vanola had therefore left without picking up several half-sovereigns that were placed either on top of the piano or at the end of the keyboard.
