CHAPTER SEVENThe world seemed as black as pitch as she edged along the path that ran through the kitchen garden. Dark earth melded into darker sky. Most nights the stars over Rosscullen were bright as silver pins, but tonight they were all hidden, as was the moon. She had not dared bring a light of any kind in case someone had looked out from the house. The yellow glow would have been visible bobbing through the trees. She could not run the risk of alerting Sir Uriel or Captain Huggins of her departure. Rosaleena made her way round to the front of the house. With the building behind her, she knew that she must veer to the left. She stopped with a tiny cry as something swooped close to her ear. Immediately she glanced back certain that someone must have heard her, but no one stirred.
