CHAPTER TWORosaleena reached the door at the same time as Sir Uriel and Lady Rosscullen, who then shot her a somewhat nervous look. “Uncle Uriel,” said Rosaleena, a little too brightly. “Allow me to introduce Colonel Joyce. Mama and I had the good fortune to become acquainted with him over tea at Fortnum’s and I – invited him to my ball.” Sir Uriel looked furious, but he managed to give the Colonel a curt bow. “You must surely have made quite an impression, Colonel, to be so honoured.” “I cannot answer for the impression I made, sir, but an honour it certainly is,” the Colonel returned politely.
