Chapter 4 Back at the clinic, Clara dithered over sharing the invitation with Miss Maggie, suspecting how her friend might react. In the end, after seeing one of her favorite scaly patients, she came clean, simply because she had to tell someone. Much to her surprise, Miss Maggie merely smiled and muttered something along the lines of “It’s about time,” then pardoned herself to make a phone call. The rest of the afternoon flew by in a flurry of dogs and cats and other little critters; Clara even tended to a child’s newly acquired turtle. When it began to creep closer to five o’clock, Clara noticed the slight tremble in her hand, her nerves starting to get the best of her. She hugged Miss Maggie goodbye, said she’d see her tomorrow, and then set up the clinic phone to forward to her cell
