As he sat in his second period honors history class taught by Mrs. Cooper, Daniel quickly noticed that his fellow black students were increasingly getting agitated as the day"s discussion continued. Mrs. Cooper had assigned each eighth grade class to watch the rerun of the miniseries Roots that was being aired in commemoration of its upcoming sequel. The sequel would be airing in two more weeks during the middle of February 1979. Every day Mrs. Cooper would ask questions about the weeklong assignment and the emotional response thickened the air in the classroom. She posed provocative questions during every history class which she had issued this assignment. The questions that Wednesday morning were about episode two of the miniseries.
