I needed to get out of there!
As soon as I hit the gate, I completely let Mac take over.
We ran.
Ran and ran and ran.
Mac was growling in my head.
He was pissed that I left my so called-mate back there.
Pissed that I didn't help her.
"Go back and get our mate, NOW!" Mac yelled at me as we ran.
It took all my strength, to keep him from turning our furry ass back to the coven house.
"SHE is not our f*****g-MATE! Adeline is our ONLY mate! How can you f*****g forget that!" I yelled at him in our mind.
Mac whimpered as the image of our sweet Adeline crept its way into our mind.
I can still feel her soft touch on my back. The smell of her strawberry shampoo in her hair. The way her smile could light up the room and so contagious that made everyone smile around her.
How the f**k could I ever love another female the way I loved my Adeline.
No!
I refuse.
At that moment I realized I was being flanked by Jasper and Fred. Two members of the Guard. Mac stopped running and we turned around to face them. They stopped running as well and slowly trotted up to me.
I growled at them as a warning to back off.
"Stand down you two! I don't need a f*****g babysitter! Tell Patrick that I ran home. Stop f*****g following me!" I declared at them, in my Beta voice, through the mind link.
They whimpered and started pawing at the dirt in front of them, with their paws in submission to my order.
I turned around and continued my run. Knowing that they would follow through on my command.
I could feel the Alpha trying to mind-link with me. Knowing it was useless to ignore his call, I opened the link.
"What the f**k are you doing Marcos?" Damian growled through the link.
"I need some time. I need to clear my head. Just let me go, Damian." I begged him.
I guess he could hear the desperation in my voice.
"Dawn. I want you back in my office at dawn. We got s**t to deal with." Damian ordered.
Mac growl-barked in affirmation. Then I closed the link.
I ran to the lake near my old house.
The house I shared with my one, true mate.
ADELINE!
We used to come here all the time. Adeline's feet were getting swollen the last three months of her pregnancy and we would soak our feet together in the Moon Goddess spring. Adeline claimed it would help soothe the ache in her feet.
Sniffing the air and making sure no one was around, I phased back into human form. Knowing I didn't bring any clothes to change into, I wanted to make sure no one would come upon me while I was naked. Not that I would care. We wolves are used to being in naked or semi-naked forms all the time.
Fuck!
I felt THE spark!
Her asking if I electrocuted her, assures me she felt it too.
It's only been almost a year since Adeline went into the fade. How could I possibly open my heart to another female in that short amount of time? I can't comprehend how that can even be possible. And a f*****g witch!
A WITCH!
The filthy magic creatures that had a hand in taking my Adeline away from me.
She was chained. She had to have been doing something evil, to have someone chain her up in a dirty basement. She has to be an evil witch!
But would the Moon Goddess allow me to paired up to an evil witch?
Haven't I f*****g suffered enough.
I stay by the water for hours and I can't get the image of that Latina witch out of my mind.
Her black straight hair looked so soft, even though you could tell it hadn't been washed in a while. Her beautiful, big, brown eyes, filled with fear and hopelessness.
I f*****g left her there!
Guilt fills me and my heart tightens.
How I could just leave her there?
As I see the sun rising, I still don't have an answer and my guilt just intensifies.
I get up and phase back to my wolf form. I run till I stop by my apartment. I quickly change and pick up Layla, who is sound asleep in the nursery at Addie's place. I carry her and her diaper bag to the castle. I walk in, head up the stairs and knock on Fae's door. Hoping she is awake at this hour.
When Fae opens the door, she is still in her nightgown and gladly takes Layla to watch over, while I go down to talk to the Alpha.
Alpha Damian is brewing at this desk when I walk in.
"Sit!" he orders with a growl.
I obediently sit in the chair in front of him.
"I have been sitting here for the past hour trying to figure out what the hell has gotten into you, man."
Damian starts and I try to interrupt but his glare silences me and I let him continue,
"You were the one that was all gung-ho on doing this mission and then you leave f*****g Dem hanging in that coven house by himself. Not that his ass complained, but it could have gone so wrong, so quick. Does it even interest you to know that he brought back the bottles of f*****g potion and that Kate is analyzing them as we speak."
That news makes my head go up.
"What has she come up with?" I ask, very interested.
"Nothing yet. She is still working on it. Now, you going to tell me what the hell happened?" He asks me.
I give him a rundown of what I found in the basement.
I had already told him of the convo I had had with Adeline after she walked into the fade, back over a year ago. I know he thought I was nuts at the time, hell, even I thought I was losing it.
I still remember that conversation clear as it was a year ago:
"My Marcos. Oh, my sweet, Marcos." Mac stops running as we hear Adeline's voice in our head.
What the f**k! Am I imagining this?
"No. Marcos, it's me, honey. I can't talk for long. Our sweet Moon Goddess allowed me one short, last message to you. So shut up and listen up." Adeline's sweet and commanding voice makes me smile.
"You are a male of great worth, my mate. You will raise our daughter to be just like you. She will be a great female of worth. Open your heart, my mate. You will not be alone for long. I love you and our sweet pup. You both deserve love and the sweet Moon Goddess promised me to help you find love again." Adeline whispers in my head.
"No! I will never love anyone but you, my Adeline." I cry and Mac shakes his head in agreement.
"Shhh. It's okay, baby. Give our daughter a kiss from me. Please make sure she knows me. That she knew of our love. Take care of Damian, he is our brother. I love you, Marcos. Open your heart, Marcos. Don't deny you and Layla, happiness." I hear Adeline's voice going farther away.
"No, baby! NO! Don't leave me." I run as if I could catch up with her voice. But she is gone. My head is silent.
Damian's gasp pulls me out of my memories.
"You felt a spark when you touched her?" He asked me to clarify.
"Yes and she f*****g felt it too," I say, my voice filling with guilt.
"And you f*****g left her chained, in the f*****g basement!?" Damian asks, astonished.
"Yes! Damn it! I left her there!" I yell back, still can't believing my cowardness.
"f**k, Marcos! f**k! Now, what the hell are you going to do?" He asks me in an angry voice, just fueling my guilt even more.
"I don't f*****g know. I don't want another mate, man. I can't handle opening my heart to anyone that's not my Adeline." I say to him, laying out all my raw emotions.
"I don't think you have a f*****g choice if that witch is truly your second mate. You have been given a f*****g gift, man. I have never heard of our kind having second chances of having a mate. Don't f*****g waste this. You know Adeline would want you to move on. Don't deny Layla this second chance of having a mother, either." Damian says to me in a calmer tone.
I shrug my shoulders, "I don't know if I can." I say rawly.
"Well, we can't leave her chained there, while you figure this s**t out. Goddess only knows what kind of hell she is going through right now. I mean unless she is into some kind of kinky s**t, I don't think she is being chained in a basement by choice." Damian says to me.
"I know. I have to go back and get her. The guilt is f*****g eating away at my insides, right now." I say, feeling the pain in my heart the strongest.
"s**t! How the hell are we going to manage a rescue? You know that f*****g warlock and coven are going to be on high alert if they found out, you were there. Or if she told them you were there." Damian says standing up and pacing the room.
"I don't think they knew we were there. And as frightened as she was, I don't think she would tell." I say to Damian.
"Are you sure, you guys left no trace?" Damian asks me. By the look in his eye, he was forming a plan already.
I think back to last night and then I blink fast and groan loudly.
"What?" Damian asks.
I stand up and run my hands, rubbing my head in frustration, "f**k!" I exclaim.
'What?" Alpha Damian asks again, alarmed at my outburst.
I look at him with a pain-filled stare, "I didn't close the door. I didn't close the f*****g door of the basement behind me when I ran out on her!" I groan.
