Rhys’ shoulders slump, and he leans forward tentatively, his hand reaching out as if to touch me but stopping short. “Cassie, I… I never wanted to leave you. My decision to come back here was to come back to you.” He sighs, watching me quietly. The air in the room begins to shift. A minute passes. Maybe an hour, but he finally gathers the courage and touches my cheek, wiping out the tears with his thumbs. His eyes soften as he leans forward. “You know what’s pathetic, Rhys?” I whisper, making sure I sound as hateful as possible. “After all these years, after all this pain, I still care about you.
