Chapter six

Nova stumbled slightly, disoriented by the sudden punch, his eyes flashing with barely contained fury. “You…!” Nova cursed, about to lash out when Cassidy held his arm slightly, he tensed and calmed down slightly but was still trembling with fury. Dave's eyes darted down to Cassidy's grip on Nova's arm and he wanted nothing more than to wrench her hand away and cut off Nova's arm. That should have been him, jealousy washed over him and pain made his heart ache, he wanted to make things right so badly but here she was, ignoring his very existence. Is this rejection feels like? He wanted to scoff at the thought, if this was what it felt like then it hurt like hell. Cassidy whispered something into Nova's ear and Dave's eyes widened at how close she was to him. What type of relationship did she have with him to warrant this? Hell no, they couldn't be dating or something. A businessman that Dave had been speaking to, stepped towards Dave as the whole fiasco had shocked everyone present at the ball and everywhere was silent. “Mr Lionel, perhaps you would like to calm down and maintain some decorum, please. You have become quite the spectacle” The man whispered to Dave who ignored the man, his gaze still fixed on Cassidy who was staring back at him with fury in her eyes. She stepped forward and even though he knew she wanted to shout at him, he didn't care, his heart warmed up to know that she had finally acknowledged him. “Mr. Dave Lionel! That was quite uncalled for!” She yelled at him, her eyes wide. Nova had taken a step back, wincing as he touched his nose which seemed slightly out of shape. Dave felt a wave of panic rush towards him. This was it. The rejection after Al those years but he wouldn't let that happen. He clenched his fists by his side, trying to take a step closer to her. “Wait, we need to talk..” he said, trying to keep the tremble out of his voice. Damn it, he didn't care if everyone was staring at him, he needed to talk to her, at least find out how she had been after all these years, clear the tension between them at least “No, we don't!” She said pointedly, taking a step back, her hand hooked with Nova who was silent. Dave glared at the hand she used to hold Nova and shut his eyes tightly for a moment. He needed to keep his cool even if he wanted to plant another punch on Nova's face. “I swear to God, Dave…” Nova finally spoke up but that was as far as he got when Dave sent him a warning glare. “Shut the hell up!” Irritation crept into his voice and he frowned. f**k, the alcohol was beginning to kick in and he felt his anger multiplying by folds. Nova wanted to talk but Cassidy shook her head at him and he kept quiet. “Mr Lionel, may I speak to you?” Cassidy asked calmly, her eyes staring intently at Dave. Talk? That was a great idea to Dave, it was progress at least and he would accept whatever she had to offer. He nodded and she gestured him to a corner, he followed her, hope in his eyes while people grudgingly went back to enjoying the ball. When they were in a corner of the massive hall where no one could hear them, Cassidy stopped and crossed her arms over her chest, irritation in her eyes. She hated all these. He was the one who threw her out so why the hell did he still think that he could come and dictate how she lived her life again? He was wrong if he thought that she would be open to him. She was naive all those years but not anymore, she was back as a changed person and he was going to pay for what he did. “It's nice…seeing you…” He began, his voice shaking as his eyes roved all around her making her cringe. “No, no it's not. I can't say the same for you” There was no point trying to beat about the bush. She hated him and she wasn't going to give him a chance to waltz Into her life again. Her words hurt him, and he winced feeling like she had stabbed him with an arrow, he deserved it and he knew it but it still hurts to hear her say it. He opened his mouth to talk but she silenced him with a raise of her hand. “Don't! Do you think you can make me stay away from him? No, Mr Lionel! I will do what I want! We don't know each other…understood?” She asked him, her voice firm as she stared at him. Mr Lionel? Hell, that hurt. She was referring to him so formally and he hated it. “Just…listen to me, okay? I'm sorry, is sorry for everything” he blurted out and she let out a bitter chuckle that made his skin crawl with goosebumps. He knew. What she was going to say was so obvious and he braced himself for it. “I'm sorry too,” she said with a bitter grin. “Whㅡ” “I'm sorry that I was so naive. Don't you dare try to butt into my life again. Know your place” She completed her statement and walked past him back into the ball with a frozen smile on her face. Dave was dazed for a second, his eyes distant as he just stood there, unable to tear his gaze away from the empty space she just stood. It shouldn't have hurt like this, he should have expected it but he was hurt, his heart felt like it had been wrenched out of his heart and fed to a bunch of ravenous wolves. Slowly, he got a hold of himself and turned back to the party, his eyes searching around the clusters of people talking to at least catch a glimpse of her again but she wasn't there. Frowning, he went back into the ball, searching for her to no avail before someone walked up to him. “Have you seen Miss Payton?” Dave asked hurriedly, his heart thumping loudly in his chest. The man who was holding a glass of champagne between his fingers, looked at him weirdly. “She left with Mr Tresses” the man informed and Dave felt his entire heart shatter once more. She had actually left the party with Nova. Damn it!
