Chapter 15, Angel James: Angel looked out over the deck and crew of the Pathfinder. It was a small ship in the fleet but filled a vital role. With a crew of twenty and a shallow hull, it sailed where other ships couldn’t. Built for speed, with oars to escape danger when there was no wind. As designed, the craft provided the eyes and ears for the fleet. Carrying few arms and with its small crew, the speed of the black sails was its best defense. His blue-green eyes scanned the crew as they waited under a protective canopy that had been stretched over the deck. Initially rigged for protection from the sun, it worked equally as well to protect from the steady rain that accompanied the ships from their homes far in the south to the raiding grounds in the north.
