She became even more impressed when they drove nearer. In the gardens which sloped down from the Palace to the road there were four huge fountains throwing their water up to the sky. There was a long flight of steps from the Palace down to the road beneath it. But they did not have to climb them. Instead they drove on up a road that led up to one side of the Palace. At a most impressive entrance there were sentries on duty and a red carpet over the steps. Inside the front door there were a great number of extravagantly liveried servants in attendance.
