Chapter 7: The First Working Day

This was Yuri's first day of work. She sat with three other new employees in a meeting room. Chan came last and joined. The recruitment department immediately processes the employee card as well as the office access card, then distributed laptops. They attended a company introduction session. After they were shown their respective workplaces, all new people were taken around to find out the office area while being introduced to other employees.
Yuri glanced at Chan briefly. The man glanced back at her with a teasing smile. After the whole series of events was finished, Yuri returned to her workplace. The internal audit department had a closed and locked area. There was a password that needed to be entered into the locking mechanism in front of the door.
"Yuri, this is a field investigation schedule for operational audits. Later you can work with Chris for the audit process. The schedule was already available. You can start by checking the warehouse area," said Hans, Internal Audit Department Head.
"Can I access audit documentation from previous years? I want to learn it first," Yuri said.
"Okay, you can access the file in the internal audit sharing folder. Later Chris will open access data for you," Hans answered.
"Thank you. If I find something during the audit process, what do I need to do?" Yuri asked.
"There is a report format that you can fill out if there are field findings. For audit techniques and procedures for following up, you can read in the manual I just emailed. If there are other questions, you can ask me or Chris," Hans said.
"Noted, Sir. Thanks. I will catch up," said Yuri being polite.
Chris immediately approached Yuri and gave the necessary documents. He was quiet and only spoke as needed.
"Yuri, you'd better learn all of these documents quickly. I opened access to the sharing folder. The password is in your email. Compile a list of your questions, so after that, you can ask directly at once. I don't like to be disturbed when I'm working," Chris explained efficiently.
"Fine, Mr. Chris. I understand. Thank you for your help," Yuri said.
"Just call Chris. I have a deadline, so maybe I can't keep up with you all the time. Just study the document first. Maybe tomorrow or the day after, if my project deadline is over, we can have time to discuss our project together," said Chris trying to smile.
"Thank you, Chris. If there is anything I can help, just say it. I also don't want to be a hassle," Yuri answered respectfully.
"Get ready to work hard and stay up late. Take care of your health. Our superiors are very demanding, and we must be able to complete the work requested without being able to say no. I'll leave first," Chris said.
Yuri began to read the guidance documents and study the work process as an internal auditor. She immediately gained access to open old files from previous audit findings. Yuri hopes to find the audit findings referred to by Rosalia without raising suspicion at anytime soon.
In the IT department, Chan was immediately introduced to the IT Team. He sat in one area with the other IT Security team. Chan's desk was only given a short divider with his coworkers. This made it easier for him to know the abilities of his colleagues.
The Supporting Function area was on the same floor, including the IT and Internal Audit departments. Yuri and Chan were on the same floor and adjacent area. Not far from them there was a common area for employees to sit and make coffee or having lunch together.
Eric Setiawan, Head of IT Security System, Chan's immediate supervisor, occupied a more comfortable individual cubical. Behind his chair was a wall, so the laptop screen automatically faced the wall. So it's a bit difficult for Chan if he wanted to peek at Eric's login and password.
Important data and systems within the company were protected on the company's internal network. To be able to access it, employees had to access the data or system in the office using the network provided by the company. To be able to access it from outside, Chan needed to get access to the login and password that belongs to Eric. Since Chan was a newbie, his access was limited.
There were two ways to find out Eric's login and password access. The first way, took a peek when Eric entered the password. Secondly, he carried out brute force attacks to get Eric's password.
Chan decided to personally know Eric first. He couldn't move too rashly.
"Hi, Chan. I want to explain our working process. Because we are in the IT security area, of course, we get more security access from other parties. But you certainly know that we must be able to keep secrets from others, even though the requester is our own friends. Do you copy that?"
"Yes, I copy that, Sir."
"I know you graduated abroad. So, I have a lot of expectation on you," said Eric.
"Thank you, Sir. I'm trying to be a permanent employee here. Please guide me during my three months probation time," Chan replied politely.
"Your ability is very impressive from your educational records and job test results. Hopefully, you feel comfortable and can follow the rhythm of work here. Now we begin the technical briefing session for you," Eric said.
Chan nodded.
Eric changed his laptop angle and typed in the password there. He did not give a gap for Chan to peek at the password that was typed on his laptop.
Chan tried to peek but Eric glanced and glared at him. Chan immediately shifted his gaze in another direction to reduce Eric's suspicion. It was too early to make any enemy on the first day.
After getting direction from Eric, Chan returned to his seat. Next to him, Socrates, a fellow IT Security System Officer, was waiting for him. He was asked by Eric to help Chan as a buddy coach during the probation period.
"Did you receive an assignment from the boss?" Socrates asked in courtesy.
"Yes, I did. It's still the initial stage for the introduction and adaptation of work systems," Chan replied.
"Eric demands that we work independently and efficiently. The demands of work quality are very high. I hope you can survive when he is in a bad mood," Socrates said giving a subtle reminder that their boss was not an approachable person.
"Yes, I'll keep that in mind. Looks like he is a reserved person and keeps his distance, huh? Is this included in the demands of the job or is his character like that?" Chan asked briefly.
"Eric emphasizes us to keep a distance from all other departments to maintain professionalism at work. I think it’s fair enough because we work in the IT Security department. But I guess, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be friends, right? We also need to work together with other people to make our work successful," Socrates said.
"Yes, it is true. Alright, I'll try my best to be professional according to Eric's request," Chan said.
"Have you worked in this field before?" asked Socrates.
Chan shook his head. "I had an internship in several places. But to have a real job in a big company as an IT Officer, this is the first experience."
"Welcome onboard newbie. I have been working in this field for about three years. Maybe I can share some work tips for you," Socrates said, bragging a little.
"With pleasure. Anyway, can we get free coffee here?" Chan asked.
"Sure. You can find a coffee machine in the employee lounge. There are free snacks and coffee. You can take it as you wish. In the morning, breakfast is also provided. You have to be fast because the breakfast is limited," answered Socrates while sipping his coffee latte.
"Wow, that’s nice. If so, I'll take a quick move to grab some coffee in the lounge. I’ll be back," Chan said with a happy grin.
When Chan rushed to the lounge to get coffee at the coffee machine, he saw Yuri had just finished making coffee at the machine. Chan recognized Yuri's back. He hurried over to Yuri.
"Yuri, I want coffee too. Teach me how to use the machine!" Chan whispered near Yuri's ear.
Yuri's ears immediately blushed hearing Chan's sexy voice in her ear. She accidentally turned around in surprise and spilled some hot coffee in her mug, splashing on Chan's chest.
"Ouch, it's hot!" shrieked Chan grinned. He stared irritably at his shirt.
"I ... I'm sorry! It’s an accident!" Yuri exclaimed feeling guilty.
