Only one

“Son, let’s not get excited now. Come sit down. The help is bringing out the food in just a moment.” I rub Jayce’s back and try to help calm him down. He lets out a breath and kisses me on the head before walking me to the table. He pulls out a chair for me, and I take a seat. “Gwen this is my father, Andrew.” He says, looking at the guy who could be his twin. “Nice to meet you” I tell him. “Gwendolyn, what a beautiful name for a beautiful woman. My son is a lucky man. ” His dad is actually really sweet. I can tell he is a sincere person. Jayce’s mom speaks up. “You may call me Lark. These two beautiful women here are Sadie and Georgia. Georgia was my past sons mate, and Sadie is her sister. ” His mom really does take over everything. “Well it’s nice to be here and to meet everyone. “ The one that I think is Sadie speaks up. “Hi Jaycie! My sister and I have been wanting to visit you.” “I can’t imagine why.” Jayce says in an unhappy tone. “Oh you are so silly, Jaycie. I told your mom how much I missed you, so she invited us over.” “Of course she did. Sadie, can we not do this. My mom doesn’t get to decide my mate, you know.” I can feel tension in the air now. The way Sadie is trying to give Jayce a pet name is cringe worthy, to say at the least. Jayce’s mom speaks up again. “Jayce, I know you and Georgia decided not to be chosen mates, but her sister here would be willing to share you. You can have two mates and Lunas.” If she is suggesting that I share Jayce with anyone, she is mistaken. I feel so angry, but I can’t let this get out of control. I bite my lips, trying to keep them closed and hug Jayce’s arm for comfort. “ Let me make this clear to all of you right here and now. Gwendolyn is my mate. She is and will be my only one. I would choose her over one hundred chosen mates. I don’t want anymore of this non-sense mother.” Just as he said that the food arrives and a plate is set in front of us. It feels awkward between everyone now. Sadie still seems set on Jayce by the way she is looking at him. Georgia still looks sad. I would be too if I lost my mate. Andrew looks mad and keeps glaring at Lark, who seems to look a little chapped now. We need a distraction. I look at my plate, and there is something I don’t recognize. It looks like a little pie or something. “This food looks delicious, but what is that?” I point to it with my fork. “It’s Quiche, you will like it, baby.” Jayce tells me. I take a small bite, and he is right. “Lark this food is so delicious. Thanks for inviting us.” Before she can respond, Sadie makes a loud moaning sound, and she drops her fork loudly so we all look at her. “This really is a delectable meal, Lark.” “Thank you, girls. Now Jayce.” “Lark, can we not.” Andrew warns her, and she stops talking. I try to eat fast so we can leave, but I keep getting distracted by Sadie. She is copping everything I am doing. Eating what I eat and drinking when I drink. Only she is much louder, humming, and moaning. It makes me want to gag. Jayce turns to me. “Sweetheart, you have a little something on your face. Let me get it.” He holds my face and wipes the side of my mouth with his napkin, then kisses my lips. I feel slightly embarrassed to kiss in front of his parents. Even though I still enjoyed it. Sadie drops her fork against her plate again, but we both ignore her this time. “Gwendolyn, please tell us a little about yourself.” Andrew speaks up. “Well I like reading and drawing. Sometimes I like painting.” “Oh, I like doing that stuff, too.” Sadie yells over me. “Please Sadie calm down.” Her sister whispers to her. “I also just learned how to garden, and I enjoy that.” “What about your pack and your family?” Lark asks. I have to give this thought. I don’t think I can be fully honest with them. That’s how I feel in my heart. “Mom, that’s private for her, okay?” “It’s a normal question, Jayce.” “They are gone. My pack and my family. I don’t like to talk about it” I say. “So you are just some rogue?” Sadie says. “She is a part of this pack and a part of this family now. That’s all that matters.” Jayce says over her. “Talking about family, I am expecting lots of grandchildren.” I spit my drink out and start coughing. Jayce pats my back. “Mom please!” “She needs to know my expectations, son.” Once I stop coughing, I take a slow sip of my drink. “I could be your Surrogate if she can’t give you enough babies Jayce. The women in my family are very fertile.” “No thanks, Sadie. we will be just fine. We have been together only a few days, so naturally, we haven’t talked about any of this. I don’t expect anything like that out of my mate either. She isn’t some breeding cow mom.” My face must be so red. I even feel hot. I am still a virgin and just entered my first relationship. The thought of children seems years away, at the very least. “I’m finished eating. “ I say, hoping Jayce gets us out of here now. This conversation has been plenty. “We should get going, but before we leave, I should probably give you an update on a new pack law that I am starting today.” “Oh, a new law, what is it, son?” “punishing the help is now forbidden and will result in banishment. That includes any form of physical harm brought against them.” His mom is quiet for really the first time. It is hard thinking about what she did to Lily. I hope this gets her to stop. After no one says anything for a moment, Jayce and I say our goodbyes and run out of there. Once we are in the car, we both take a breath of air. Everything feels so much lighter. “So will one apology cover this, or should we go over every awful moment at a time.” “You don’t have to apologize. It wasn’t the worst thing that I ever sat through.” “Let’s go home. We have to go over some things for your first shift tomorrow so you feel comfortable when it happens.” “I would definitely appreciate that. I am both excited and nervous. I have been feeling a lot since you brought me here. Thank you for saving me and convincing me to stay. It almost feels like everything happened a lifetime ago.” “Was it worth what just happened back there?” “Completely worth it. It wasn’t all bad either. Your dad seems kindhearted and sincere.” We pull up into the garage. “He really is. Let me get your door.” He gets out and then helps me out of the car. We walk to our floor hand in hand. I survived his family, and I feel like we are stronger for it. I am feeling really good despite how bad that all was. “Let’s go in here. We just got it finished.” He points to the room that’s been under construction. “What is the room for?” “It would be better if I show you.” He opens the door slowly, and a familiar scent hits my nose. Books! “SURPRISE!”
