“You have work to do. You need to start remembering pack laws and history.”
“Speaking about work, can we stop by my work. I think I will have to tell Mr. Woods that I can’t come in anymore.”
“Are you sure you want to quit?”
“I think we both know that my hands will be too full here. Perhaps we could still do business with him, and I can still visit.”
“We can do that.”
After cleaning up and going into my wonderful new office, Jayce hands me the paperwork that he put together for me.
We go over page by page, and he quizzes me after each one. Once we get to the last one, I can’t be thankful enough.
“Can we please go to the store now.”
“we sure can!” I jump out of my desk and run out.
On the way to the car, I hardly see anyone.
“Where is everyone, Jayce?”
“They are probably in the clearing in the woods, preparing and getting excited for the full moon. Lots of people are excited about your shift.”
“Wow, I feel a little pressure now.”
“Don’t worry about it. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
He opens the car door for me, then gets in on his side. The trip back to the store feels so unreal. I just realized that I was wearing a dress and wedges. My hair is braided, and I have a little makeup on. What is Mr. Woods going to think about me? I have been a whole new person since I last worked. I feel incredibly insecure.
“Take a deep breath, baby. He is going to be happy for you. He thinks you were hurt in an accident, so he will be relieved to see you looking so healthy.”
“I forgot about that. I hope he forgives me for leaving him.”
“I know him. All he wants is for you to he happy. Let’s get going in, baby girl.”
He helps me out of the car. We walk in, and I feel nervous. No one is to be seen, but I hear a moaning sound from behind the desk.
We walk over, and Mr. Woods is laying there, bleeding. I scream and run back to help him. Jayce takes off his shirt and covers his wound. It looks like he was shot.
“He is still in here!” He points to the back.
Jayce hands me his phone since I didn’t bring mine.
“Call 911, I can take care of him.”
“Jayce!”
“He won’t have silver bullets. I will be fine.”
He leaves, and I call for help. I keep pressure on his wound while we wait for help. I can hear a struggle in the back. I am so scared right now, but I must put on a brave face.
“Jayce is so strong he will be fine. Just stay awake for me.” I tell him. He looks calm, but he might be hiding his fear like I am.
“You look good, kid.” He manages to tell me.
A tear falls from my eye. I can’t let him die.
I hear a shuffling sound, and Jayce comes back out, dragging some guy with him.
I feel a huge sense of relief that he is okay.
“Is He dead?”
“No just passed out.”
Police pop through the door, and Jayce put his hands up. He tells them everything, and they come over and take my spot until medics run in. I take a moment to cry in Jayce’s arms. I can’t help it, Mr. Woods is like a dad to me.
Once everything got cleared up, Jayce promised to take me over to visit him first thing tomorrow.
“Jayce we can’t let him go back there again. I won’t be there to save him.”
“What can we do? He is a grown man, Gwen.”
“We can buy his business. Then he can retire, and I won’t have to stress so much.”
“You want to buy his business?”
“His business does really good, and the pack could use all of the supplies. We are still halfway through building. Also, I can make some of the lumber to sell. I feel like it will be a great idea.”
“We will discuss it with him if he is up to it tomorrow. I will admit it’s a smart investment, but I can’t force him to take any deal.”
“Thank you, Jayce.”
We travel back to the pack, and I take a shower as soon as I can. I cry again as I watch all of the blood go down the drain. At least no one can see me cry this time. Once I get out, I put on a robe and blow dry my hair.
I hear a knock at the door, so I answer it.
“Rio I am happy to see you.”
“Gwen what happened? You look like you were crying.”
Well, now I am embarrassed.
“My boss from the hardware store got shot. It’s going to be okay, though. I will see him tomorrow. “
She hugs me tight.
“I am so sorry.”
“Was there something you needed?”
“Oh yeah, I wanted to help you get ready for dinner. It will be out in the woods. We will eat and dance it will be the distraction you need.”
“Sounds nice. What should I wear?”
“I made you a dress that is very easy to take off for the shift. Some people will be nude earlier It’s up to you.”
She goes through my closet and pulls out a white dress. It is strapless and has support for my boobs. She also has a pair of simple flip-flops that match.
“Nothing crazy, just cozy clothes, and let’s keep your hair down. No makeup. Just keep everything natural.”
“That sounds just like what I need. Just to feel natural and comfy.”
I put everything on in the bathroom, and when I come out, Jayce is talking to Rio.
“Hey handsome.”
“Hello gorgeous! You look fantastic, Gwen.”
“Really? I am underdressed.”
“You look like a natural beauty to me.”
The walkout to the woods was a little haunting after what happened to me last time. Once we got to the clearing, it was beautiful and totally worth it. There are vibrant flowers and a waterfall. There is a huge, extremely long picnic table and blankets spread out with baskets. Everyone was in good spirits. The air even seems sweeter here.
“Once it’s nighttime, we will be able to see the moon right there perfectly in the sky.” Jayce shows me.
A long line of people started carrying food to the table along with drinks and everything we needed for dinner.
“I would have helped if I had known.”
“You can help next full moon. This is your special day this time.”
“I almost forgot it’s my birthday.”
“I didn’t, turn around.”
I turn around and see Rio and Cedric holding a cake for me. It has 18 lit candles.
Everyone sings happy birthday to me. It’s so loud that I am sure the whole world heard it.
“Make a wish!” Jayce says.
I wish for everyone I love to remain safe.
“I blow out the candles, and everyone cheers.”
I feel so blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing people.
“Thank you, everyone!”
I take a seat at the end of the table, and people immediately gather around me. Some people I am starting to remember.
“Hello Luna!” I look and see a woman holding a tinfoil cake pan.
“Hello what’s your name?”
“I am Cindy, and I used your peaches to make you a cobbler for your birthday.”
“That is incredibly kind of you.”
“I was wondering if you could possibly grow a peach tree in my yard for my family.”
“Of course I can. Let me just see if someone has paper or a pen so I can write down your name and what you want.”
“Luna I got you some stationary.”
“Thank you.” I open the bag, and there is beautiful printed paper in it.
“Now I just need a pen.”
“Here Luna I got you nice ink pens.” He hands me a small wood case, and it has three high quality looking pens in it.
“Well I didn’t expect anyone to get me anything. If anyone wants a plant grown in their yard or just something I can do for them, let me write it down so I can get to it as soon as possible.”
A lot more people than I expected line up. I get their names and try to remember something about them. I warned the ones who wanted flowers that I had never grown them before. Before I know it, time has flown by, and it’s starting to get dark. All the kids are tucked away at home, and the adults here are getting wild.
Lots of members are opting to go nude. I decided to stay dressed. There are people skinny dipping and swimming. I take off my shoes and feel the ground under my feet. I feel a connection so deep within me to the earth.
“You will have a good shift.” I open my eyes, and Jayce is in front of me. I can smell his delicious smell and feel his confidence.
“Why would you say that?”
“I can feel it, and I can see it. You are connecting with nature. That’s how it was for me.”
Goldie comes down and lands on my shoulder. She glows in the dimness of the sky.
“I feel both peace and chaos. I feel peace from the earth but chaos from the moon.”
