McCullah

City lights lit up the night sky with all of the smells and sounds of a bustling city forming the backdrop for a determined man dressed like a runaway rockstar walked down the busy streets ignoring all distractions. He wore the scars of immortality deep within himself while passing by people whose distinct images pungent with present senses intertwining with the faded years of the past making his memories more tactile in his mind. A sudden crash combined with screeching tires and shattering glass made even louder by screaming voices in agonizing pain drug his mind quickly away from his somber reminiscing to the gory scene that now confronted his vision and filled his nose with the sweet smell of fresh blood. If he was alone when the car crashed on a desolate country road or at least somewhere that wasn’t full of excited spectators as what made him contain his ravenous nature, he would have ran to the pile of twisted metal with the blood covered sidewalk and ate his fill from the dead woman’s flesh after pulling her body out of the shattered car window. The momentary pause to his aberrance allowed him to notice the sound of the barely beating heart of a small child that was knocked unconscious when his mother crashed their once beautiful black SUV. The dark, mysterious stranger held back his speed enough that he would appear like a regular human pulling on ancient emotions from when he was mortal and dove inside an opening in the wreckage that revealed sparks flashing barely missing the leaking gas letting the man know time was extremely short. The man gashed his harm reaching for the young boy who had no idea his fate rested on a monster’s lapse in judgment momentarily placing his own secrets in danger of being made public. He clutched the child close to his chest as he quickly leaped out of the mangled vehicle and out of the way just as flames engulfed the entire mess. Sean McCullah sat by the window of his own bar where he was able to watch his patrons as well as the boisterous street outside and the many activities that the city of Boston had to offer. He was drinking his usual Irish beer while he relaxed and was about to call his wife who actually conducted most of his business to check in with her when he noticed a black SUV loose control after avoiding a red truck that cut in front of it. He paid no mind at first glance because it seemed inconsequential until the driver of the SUV couldn’t regain control immediately as it had no breaks, he changed his mind about calling his wife and dialed 911 instead. 911 first responders were immediately dispatched after the operator overheard the crash and received a flood of emergency calls from the same area. Sean saw a man running towards his bar with an injured child held close as they barely escaped the explosion that resulted from sparks igniting the spilled gas that was now burning while police began to take control of the scene. They wanted to make sure of everyone’s safety while they waited for the firefighters and ambulances to take care of any wounded while the blazes were being put out. He eagerly opened his door to allow the man and child inside however the man just passed off the blood covered child to him and quickly disappeared in the gathering crowd outside the bar. The excited people watched with admiration as the firefighters put out the fire before it got out of hand while Sean flagged down a nearby EMT to help the little boy. He saw the once noticeable gash in his forehead close up like a skin zipper leaving behind no mark as if it was never there and he opened his eyes that glowed bright red fading back into his original brown eyes. He looked up at Sean and asked him where was his mother then he began to cry after he was told that she died in the crash. Sean introduced himself to the boy as kind as he could keeping in mind that he just learned that his mother was gone while the boy looked up with his tear filled eyes and said that his name was Tommy. An EMT began to walk over finally only now Sean called out to him that there was no hurry because he was ok, still the technician wanted to make sure he didn’t have any more injuries since he was informed about the stranger that rescued the child originally. Sean lied to the EMT saying Tommy was his godson and it would be ok for him to wait for his father to pick him up there. Sean’s ruse only lasted the night when it was discovered that Tommy’s father was unknown and his mother had no other family alive that could be connected with her son. Social services came to Sean’s apartment above his bar with the police and forcibly removed Tommy because the 10 year old had no known relatives to take him in. Mrs. McCullah already formed a bond with Tommy so she was highly upset and would have changed in front of those police officers if Sean hadn’t looked at her in a way that slightly shown a glimmer of red in his eyes yet not so obvious that the Humans that were there noticed any difference. Tommy cried because he didn’t want to leave the kind couple still the aggravated officers took the boy anyway and one of them suffered a vicious bite from him during the struggle. Tommy heard a strange voice in his head that told him to relax and wait for the right time and place to release his anger. He didn’t recognize the voice yet the smooth tones helped his immense sadness and anger ease up like a flexed muscle holding something heavy then letting it go after setting the object down. He arrived at a building that looked more like a prison instead of a children’s home where the officers were taking him to. An old woman with thick black rimmed glasses and a face that would strike fear even in the most criminally insane individual stood there waiting for him as if prepared to take in a villain rather than a scared child. She took Tommy by the hand sternly as she sent the officers away then she told him that her name was Mrs. Sutter and she will not tolerate any discipline problems from him like the rest of the children in her care.
