Chapter 10Savanne was pacing in his chambers when the door opened suddenly, and Val came tumbling through.
“Here he is,” Mogador said. “He is no better than a paid lover. A stiff punishment is what he needs.”
As Savanne looked down at Val with burning eyes, he said to Mogador, “Leave us.”
“Yes, sire,” Mogador said and backed away reluctantly.
Val looked up at Savanne as if he were wondering what was going on. “What is this? I thought you wanted me to stay with Claudius, yet I find myself seized by guards and brought back here.”
“I have received word that you and Claudius are…close. Is there any truth to that rumor?”
“Close? You mean like…lovers?”
“It was described to me in intimate detail.”
“By who? Mogador? Savanne, it’s a lie, and you know it.”
“Then it isn’t true.”
