CHAPTER 9

"Fine," he said coldly. "Just make sure you don't come begging me for money." Then Kiran hung up. The temperature of the car had turned frigid, making Chester feel like he was on the bottom of a frozen lake. He glanced at the rearview mirror, shivering in fear. Why is the big boss so scary today? He seemed fine just a few seconds ago! What could have happened to make him look like he had personally slayed the King of Hell? Did he and Miss Ford have a fight again? "Drive back to the old house, "Kiran ordered, his eyes dark like the blackest ink. Chester gulped but gathered the last bits of his courage. "Uh, that...aren't we following Miss Ford?" "Don't make me repeat myself." Feeling the intense pressure from his boss, Chester immediately did as he was ordered. His boss was so scary! He was just a driver, but why did he feel like the cannon fodder of a horror movie? ... Back at his old family house, Kiran strode in only to hear tinkling laughter coming from the kitchen. He could hear the two elders chatting very happily, so he decided to take a look. Riana was taking things out of her luggage, which she then presented to the elders with a humble look. "Auntie, Uncle, I bought things abroad that I thought you might like...I just saw them and I immediately thought of you!" It was easy to see at first glance that the items on the table were very expensive... "You dear girl, you shouldn't have!" Mrs. Lauder was greatly touched. "Such kindness, you should have been our daughter-in-law!" Even the old master was full of praise for Riana. Indeed, the Carlton and the Lauder family had been great friends for a very long time. Not only that, the Carlton family was only second to them in power. If Riana and Kiran marry, it would truly be a pairing that could topple mountains and overturn seas! Carlos' eyes tightened. If only his son hadn't been so determined to keep his word to a lowly actress, this sort of calamity wouldn't have happened. "Don't say that, Uncle," Riana softly said, as she blushed like a shy girl in front of the two elders. "Vanessa is an amazing woman, she even went to pick me up at the airport earlier with Kiran." Mrs. Lauder was disgruntled. "What's so great about that? She probably only went there to suck up to you. I heard actresses from the entertainment industry had to do dark and disgusting things just to get to the top! With a daughter-in-law like that, how could I bear to show my face in public?" "It was all that girl's fault. If she hadn't pressured Kiran into keeping his promise, he wouldn't have even given her a single glance! A poor girl like her from a lowly family—how could I let my son marry that kind of despicable woman?" Riana reached out with a gentle hand and slowly rubbed the old lady's back. Seeing her kind gesture, Mrs. Lauder relaxed. "Riana, I think Kiran is in love with you. You've been friends for so long, how could he not realize what kind of a gem you are? If you tell him you don't want him to marry that kind of girl, surely he will change his mind..." Kiran, who had been standing at the doorway listening quietly to their conversation, felt like it was time to interrupt. "I'm back." Carlos had a smile on his face as soon as he saw his son. "Finally, you're here! Just where did you go that was so important?" "Business." Kiran was not completely lying, he had followed Vanessa to make her his secretary. "You're always working!" Mrs. Lauder complained. However, she could not get mad at this outstanding son of hers. She was always so proud of him whenever she talked about Kiran to her friends. Ha! Who could compare to her son, who practically built an empire from nothing? "You're still here?" This question was directed at Riana by Kiran, who had been staring at him since he came back. Caught by his gaze, she could only tuck her head in timidly and blush. "I wanted to see you more," she whispered. "Aiya!" Seeing the two youngsters flirting with each other, Mrs. Lauder was overjoyed. She poked at her husband, subtly telling him that they should probably get out of their way. But Carlos did not get it. "What?" he grumbled at his wife, annoyed. Mrs. Lauder felt a headache coming. How could she marry someone with such a low EQ? Kiran did not pay attention to them and only picked up Riana's luggage. "You should go home and sleep." But Riana did not want to go yet. "I'm not tired..." "That's right, that's right!" Mrs. Lauder was instantly worried. "You only came back this morning. You should sleep to get rid of the jet lag." Riana pouted at Kiran. "Kiran, I want to talk to you more. I've missed you so much. Didn't you miss me too?" "Of course he missed you!" Mrs. Lauder didn't give his son a chance to reply. "Kiran is just worried about your health. I've already forgotten you just returned from abroad, but he didn't because he's concerned about you." Even though it did not come straight from Kiran's mouth, Mrs. Lauder's sugarcoated words made Riana extremely happy. "In that case, I'll go home and rest then!" She happily exclaimed. Kiran picked up Riana's luggage and carried it outside, handing it to Carlos who put it inside the trunk. When she slid into the car and the expressionless man standing outside did not follow, Riana frowned. "You're not coming?" "Carlos will drive you home." After saying that, Kiran turned around and went back inside the old house. As the car left the driveway, Riana twisted around to look at Kiran's retreating. She could not understand why he was being cold to her. Suddenly, she recalled the face of the girl that he had called his fiancée. She clenched her teeth so hard in hatred that she almost broke them. Was he being like this because of that girl? As expected, she had to do something so she could remove that trash from his sight! ..........
