Avery We met Maricela in the lobby. She’d change into a navy dress made of a silky material that made it clear her body was utterly perfect underneath. “Avery, I’m so sorry about yesterday. I didn’t know Erik was mated. He’s explained it all to me. Fated mates are so rare, but such a gift.” She smiled at me. I stared at her as if she’d grown a second head. Her voice was melodic and calm. I couldn’t muster a facial expression for her. I was glad Erik had explained it all to her because I was fumbling around in the dark. “We need to leave.” Erik's voice was gruff. I bent my head and followed him out the doors to the waiting car, ignoring Maricela’s statement altogether. It was rude and not like me, but fatigue pulled at my tattered edges. I certainly didn’t feel like I’d slept all day.
