Chapter 4

Zack “We will be expecting you on Monday at nine o’clock sharp, Mr. Miller,” the HR person told me. f**k, I’d forgotten her name already. “Yes, of course… Miss Peterson,” I said after I glanced at her ID tag. She took the contract and stuffed it inside a brown envelope. We stood up together and shook hands. “Thank you very much.” We walked out of the room as she left me. Well, I got the job. Mentally celebrating inside my head. Lucky me that I didn’t need to wait another few months, or worse, a year to get a job. I left the building as I headed to my other appointment. I rode my CBR to the bistro. It took me ten minutes to get there. A black Ducati was already there. He’s here. I went inside the restaurant and searched for him inside. Until I could hear his voice, “Zack!” I looked to the left and saw Joe waving his hand to me. Walking toward his table, he stood up. We hugged each other. “How’ve you been man?” “Great as ever. How about you, Joe?” “Same as always.” We let each other go. “I haven’t ordered anything for you. Hope you don’t mind I’ve taken a bite for myself.” “That’s okay.” I sat on the couch and waved my hand to the waitress. The blond one came to me and gave me the menu book. I ordered a meatball spaghetti and an orange juice. “So, what are you doing now, Joe?” “Just helping my old man. It’s not much but I enjoy it. Finally got myself a girlfriend too. A cute one. I’m planning to marry her after I’ve earned enough money for that,” he explained. A girlfriend, huh? Joe was my best friend since middle school. We hadn’t seen each other that much since we started the university. We were the same age but since I extended my study, Joe had graduated last year. He went through hell after he graduated. His mom passed away a few weeks after his graduation. Almost like she was waiting to see her son properly graduate first before she left him. His dad’s business wasn’t running well so Joe decided to put aside his dream to open his own garage and helped his father until he could leave him alone. He wanted to open his own bike shop. Joe had always had a thing for machines and their stuff. Even he modified his own Ducati. And to say he wanted to get married, I was quite surprised. Because this guy never paid too much attention to chicks before. His brain and d**k only focused on machines. “Marry, huh? So, you’re finally able to get hard besides making out with your bikes?” I teased and he choked his fries. “Screw you, Miller! I just didn’t believe in love before until I met her. You should meet Pamela later. Besides, I was perfectly fine without a girl.” “Yeah, yeah. Since you considered bikes as your harem before.” “Oh, shut up!” I chuckled at his reaction. Joe was pretty popular. With his dirty blond hair with a pair of dark green eyes. Women literally drowned to him, but he had zero interest in any of them. People considered him gay. What made it worse? They thought I was his love interest. Damn you all. “Have you proposed to her?” I asked. “Not yet. I haven’t bought the ring. Just a little bit more.” “You’re sure her family will accept you as their son-in-law?” “We’ve met and we’re cool. Her father loves bikes too. Come on, Zack. I don’t know if you’re worried about me or you’re just jealous since you haven’t found someone.” “Who said I’m jealous?” “Or are you feeling lonely because I’m taken?” “f**k you.” He chuckled. “I’m just screwing with you.” Damn him. At the time my orders arrived as I immediately dug in my spaghetti until he asked, “Have you found someone?” This guy was teasing me. Clearly. Joe knew. “Joe, come on. You know I can’t fall in love with someone else anymore.” “You’re still thinking about Lily? Come on, dude. That woman has rejected you like a million times. She doesn’t want you anymore. Why don’t you give up and find someone else?” he advised. Find someone else besides Lily? I mentally scoffed at the thought. Hell to the f*****g no. “Who said she doesn’t want me anymore? She’s just being stubborn.” That was right. Lily, my beautiful Sugar baby refused to admit that she was still in love with me. She could lie anytime I asked her that but I could see and read her perfectly like I could read her body. “I don’t know about that. She clearly hates you because of what you’ve done before.” “She’ll understand. She must understand.” “You went to the same university as her but you never clarify anything to her? Why?” Wasn’t it obvious? “Let’s just say… I’m still enjoying myself chasing my prey,” I stated while looking at my best friend. Shocked was completely seen on his face. Staring at me like he couldn’t believe what he just heard. That was the truth. I could easily explain everything to Lily after what happened to us before but I let it slide. Spending time letting her think that I didn’t give a s**t about what happened. It was fun watching her thinking I was playing with her. Giving me her signature disgusted look. In reality, Lily unknowingly let her guard down. She completely showed me that she still wanted me. She hated me, but she wanted me. Just like I always wanted her. I wanted her to be mine again. I would do anything to claim her again and this time, I wouldn’t let anyone take her away from me. The last time some fucker tried to get into her legs, I almost murdered him. Although he was her junior, zero tolerance for anyone who dared to touch my girl. Lily never knew that. I’d made sure of that. I was territorial. I protected what was mine. Lily Campbell was mine so I was protecting her. “What are you, man? A damn wolf? You look like Jacob Black who will immediately turn into some protective and possessive kind of guy after he found his mate,” Joe commented, making me laugh. Maybe I looked like him, after all. Besides, Lily used to say that she loved romance books between a werewolf and a human girl. She was a nerd but that didn’t mean she didn’t read novels. In fact, she loved them. And it made my blood boil just imagining Lily with another man. I wouldn’t allow that. Her place was with me. Always. Forever. “If you like her that much, just hurry up and confess. She’s pretty behind those glasses and I’m sure some guys who are aware of that want her.” “Like I said, Joe. Not now.” “You are the worst, you know that? Stop playing with her and explain. Don’t blame me if someone else got her first. At least, I’ve warned you.” “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure no one has her.” “Yeah, right.” Joe didn’t believe it now. Well, no one did at first. Not until they saw what I could do. We talked a lot right after. I told him I got a job as a Laboratory Assistant. He even f*****g mocked me that I might turn into some kind of a freak who never stepped out from the lab. It was not like I wanted to be a Chemist or something. I thought it was fun playing around with that chemical stuff. And speaking of my new job, I told Cathy a few days ago before I signed the contract today. It was all thanks to her that I got this job. The company that I’d be working was one of Ricardo Williams’ branches. She offered me this job, I tried, and boom! I got it. Maybe I should treat her something. She would get married soon here, in California. Said she wanted to hold her big day in her hometown. So typical of her and I was extremely happy for her. I liked Cathy. She was beautiful and so gentle to anyone. There was this pheromone going on around her and since she was Lily’s best friend, we became one eventually. I even managed to make Lily believe I was in love with her best friend. I was not. I was never in love with Cathy. Okay, I sounded like an asshole but I was just using her to make Lily jealous. Just to see that she was indeed still in love with me. If she found out, she would probably hit me because I was using her best friend. My phone buzzed in my pocket. I took it out and saw a message from Cathy. What a coincidence. I opened her message and my eyes widened. Hi, Zack! Have you signed the contract? If you’re free, do you want to join us? Lily asked me to come with her to the club near the beach. The usual one. Let me know if you want to join us. We’re going at eight. “Are you free tonight?” I immediately asked Joe. “Yeah. Why?” “Good. Let’s get some drinks at Apex,” I decided without listening to his answer. After we finished our meals, I immediately stood up and paid for both of us. Walking out of the restaurant, I headed to my bike. “Hey, Zack! Why so sudden?” he asked as I hopped on my CBR and turned the baby on. I turned to my best friend. “Would you like to see how I chase my prey?” “What are you—” The realization hit him. “Oh, great. She’s here, isn’t she?” “She is.” “Fine, I’ll go. In case you’re going to do something stupid,” he sarcastically said and went to his Ducati. I went back to my house to change my clothes first before I headed to Apex. Joe and I reached there together and the place was already packed with people. Heading inside, I immediately searched for Lily. Either Lily or Cathy. It was too hard to spot any of them. People were dancing and moving like there were no other people here. “Hi, handsome. Wanna dance?” a woman with dark hair wearing a pink bikini and blue shorts approached us. Oh, great. “No, I’ll pass,” Joe said. Jeez, he was too polite to women. Something that I couldn’t really do. Not now. Not ever. “That’s too bad. What about you then? Want to go somewhere private? This place is too crowded,” she turned to me immediately. Seriously, woman? She was too drunk already I could smell it from her mouth. Jesus, how many drinks did she have anyway? “Get lost. I’m not interested,” I spewed, and in an instant, she pulled away from us. Allowing us to walk past her. “Nice move, bro. But that was quite rude.” “I don’t care.” I looked around again, trying to find Lily. And everything happened in a slow motion. The hair on my nape stung. She’s close. I turned around and there she was. My girl. Wearing a tight black dress with her usual killer heels. She looked amazingly stunning. However… She was not alone. Who the f**k is that guy? Even though she was inside another man’s arms, she was trying to push him away. Without telling Joe, I made my way to her. I grabbed the asshole’s shirt and pulled him away from my girl. I wrapped my arm around her waist, hiding her. She didn’t raise her head but she knew who was the man in front of her now. Just by feeling her body spiking with my touches. See? She desired me. She remembered everything about me. About us. When she finally lifted her beautiful gray eyes, the gems I loved, I couldn’t help myself. “What the hell are you doing here, sugar baby?” “Zack,” she whispered her name. I swear to God, her whisper did a lot to my d**k. I mean, a lot. And as she realized I was real, she pulled herself from me. Wearing the usual fake disgusted expression whenever I was around. “That should be my question. What the hell are you doing here?” she asked back. It seemed she had no idea her best friend told me about their plan tonight. Oh, well. Time for a little showdown with my baby girl.
