The town was encircled by fortified walls and then Rubeus invisible barrier to keep his people safe and to keep any unwanted guests out. The guards met them at the gates of the barrier and stepped aside to let them through when they noticed it was Kayla. They made their way through the village to get to the castle.
Rubeus was accompanied by the council, including the princess and her father. The princess was ordered to marry the son of Rubeus to form a unity where the two kingdoms will work together to end wars.
Kayla unmounted from Midnight and acknowledged the council.
The council didn’t trust her because they feared the sorceress side of her.
“Hazel!” A mage called out from behind them. A woman ran over to them with tears in her eyes. The little girl met her halfway and embraced the woman who welcomed her with open arms.
“Thank you.” The mage whispered at her. She nodded at the mage and waved at Hazel before returning her attention back to Rubeus and the council.
Rubeus was the only one brave enough to meet her at the steps of the castle. “Can we accept that the witch won’t be back for another girl?” One of the council members asked.
“If you want to know if I killed her. Yes, I did.” Kayla didn’t beat around the bush. Most of the council members gasped at her vague answer but not the princess who was looking at her, eyes filled with curiosity.
Kayla looked at Rubeus breaking eye contact with the princess. “You never seem to fail me,” Rubeus said.
Kill or be killed. “If I fail it means I’m dead.” She replied.
“I’ve got another mission for you but we’ll talk about it tomorrow morning. You are probably tired after facing a witch.” Kayla kept her eyes and face blank from any emotions. Her mother always warned her to never trust anyone whose mind she can’t read. Not all of them were her friends and not everyone wanted her alive.
Kayla nodded and gestured for Midnight to go. She lived on the east side of the village. In a hut, close to the river and hidden in the forest. She savoured her freedom and solitude. She didn’t miss the looks of each villager as she made her way through the village to get to her hut. Some awed her. The others wanted her gone. Called her evil. If they only know what evil truly looks like.
Many souls were brave when they tried to kill her but found themselves at the end of her knives.
The Assassin’s tribe she belonged to, died years ago when their village got attacked. They were seen as soulless hired killers and no one has ever come near them. Kayla’s mother once told her story about when she was ordered to kill a woman’s husband after he brutally r***d and mishandled her. Her mother didn’t ask questions when she slit his throat. Kayla once didn’t understand their oath or existence until she got her first order.
She removed the reins and saddle from Midnight, gave him a quick brush and rewarded him with an apple. Before letting him graze with the rest of the animals in the field outside her hut.
She entered her hut and smiled when she felt the tip of a knife pressing against her throat. She sensed Ares from the moment she got close to her hut.
“Should I assume you are here for another round?” She asked Ares, pretending to be a mortal fearing for her life. Ares was the only one wizard who was brave enough to enter her hut.
“Hmm. That sounds like a good plan.” She could imagine his eyes raking all over her.
She took the opportunity of his distraction to jab the knife out of his hand and threw him against the wall of her hut. Ares wasn’t handsome. He was just enough to tempt her. Whenever she was done with being lonely, she knew where to find him even if it is everything against the order of his leaders. She keeps finding him in her bed since they were teenagers. He is the son of the master Wizard, Rubeus.
“You never learn, Ares. I’m not like you spell casters who ask questions first.” Kayla said, pressing the blade of the knife against his neck.
“Looks like you have no trouble defending yourself,” Ares said, skimming his eyes all over her. She knows what they were doing everything against the order of their leaders. Sleeping around with her was a crime. His powers could be banished and she can be killed.
“What are you doing here?” She asked, easing back and handed him his knife.
“My father is sending you on another mission tomorrow. I wanted to come and see you before you leave.” Her eyes followed him across the room.
“I know what you want, Ares,” Kayla said, shutting her door. She took off her cloak and watched him sit down on her bed. His eyes flickered with lust as he pulled her to him with his magic. She let him use his powers on her while he still can. “I saw you this morning and last night. Don’t you think we should be a little more discreet?” She queried feeling his hands on her, reaching for her pants.
“Am I sensing fear?” She knows Ares was mocking her because there was nothing she feared. She didn’t answer him instead she wanted to know why he didn’t fear her.
“Why aren’t you afraid of me?” Kayla asked, watching him untie the laces of her pants before reaching for the laces of her top.
“If you wanted to kill me, you have done it years ago.” He pressed an open kiss between her breasts. She wrapped herself around him as he pulled her onto his lap so that she was straddling him. He rolled her beneath him and kissed her hungrily.
Kayla felt selfish for not showing emotions or feelings towards Ares even when she knows how he feels about her.
Inheriting her sorcerer’s powers bound her to a human from a different realm and Ares wasn’t the man her soul was bound to and he didn't seem to approve of that.
“You are thinking about him again?” Ares muttered against her neck.
Kayla dropped her head back on her pillow. It was no secret. She was a sorceress and her soul was joined with someone else’s. She sensed him the first time when he turned twelve and she was ten years old. She could never understand her bound to him because he was not living in her realm but on earth.
“Are you jealous to know that I don’t belong to you, Ares?” She asked gazing up at him. Ares might be a wizard warrior that works under his father to protect the realm but he didn’t have a heart like her bondmate, Byron.
“You know much how I care about and love you but yet, you want him. A human.” Kayla pushed Ares off of her and stood up from the bed. She grabbed her gown and started to walk away from her when Ares’s magic pulled her back.
“Careful, Ares,” Kayla warned reaching for her power. “I’ve let you in my life but that doesn’t mean that you can make me submit to you.” She slightly warned him.
“He fascinates you. Why?” Ares asked standing up from her bed.
“Jealousy doesn’t fit you.” She turned around to face him. “I didn’t choose my bound, Ares. I’m not going to break it just because you fell in love with me.” Kayla knows she was unkind but Ares knew from the start that she was meant for someone else.
“I should kill him.” Her eyes flared with her power and her hands glowed from rage when he spoke those words. He took a step away from her.
“You so much lay a hand on him and I will kill you.” She warned. Ares narrowed his eyes at her.
“He’s your weakness,” Ares noted making her blood run cold.
Kayla suppressed her power when Ares made no move.“I just thought you would one day feel the same about me,” Ares mumbled, his voice laced with disappointment.
“You are destined to marry the princess. I know you are sleeping with her, Ares.” He looked a bit startled by her discovery. “I’m not mad at you, Ares but this thing between us ends tonight. In a few days, you are getting married to her.”
“Kayla, wait.” She shook her head.
“You know that we have to end things. Your father wants to form a unity by merging two kingdoms in order to protect our realm. You have obligations and so do I. We can be killed for going against your father's order."
“You are afraid of death?” She shook her head.
“I’m not afraid of death but you should be.”
