Chapter 13

1431 Words
Raine and Kayla stood outside Monica’s house after spending time coming up with a plan. They left Byron with Joey who can keep an eye on things if reinforces are called. Kayla didn't want Byron at the scene especially with an arcanist in play. She hasn't faced one ever before and she didn't know what they were capable of.   Kayla will need eyes and ears inside and that was going to be Raine’s job. Raine was going to enter the house from the second floor to take out the guards while Kayla takes the bottom. She was to stay hidden until Kayla was inside. Nightfall was looming around them which gave them both easy covers to use the shadows to their advantage. Everything seemed normal but Kayla sensed the men hiding in the shadows. “You are sensing them, aren’t you?” Raine asked, following me out of the car. Raine owned quite a collection of knives, tools, daggers and knives. She was prepared for war and Kayla was a twinge jealous but also proud. “Time to do your job.” Raine nodded and got into a position to attack. She stayed behind Kayla when Kayla reached for her magic. Her hands glowing from her power. “Show yourself.” She summoned, creating a wave of pure magic. The world around them crackled alive. The shadows were gone and she could finally see the faces of her enemy. Mortals covered in black clothes came out of hiding. “Assassins.” She told Raine. She retrieved her magic and pulled out her swords from their sheaths. She skimmed the blades against each other, igniting a purple magic spark. The assassin’s cringed at the sound. “Now!” Kayla signalled for Raine to go. Kayla leapt forward and Raine sprinted across the lawn. Darkness fell around them when Kayla re-called her magic. Her swords sliced through the darkness, creating the only light. She felt each s***h of her knife and watched the bodies drop to the ground. She kept one alive to get information out of him. She pinned him down. Sword to the throat. “Who do you work for?” She asked him. “You are not just a mortal.” The assassin observed. Kayla crouched down and leaned forward. The assassin jerked against her as she showed him her purple eyes. “What do you think?” She watched his eyes widen as her eyes sparkled devilishly purple. The sorceress side of her coming alive and showing its self. “Boccob.” Her shoulders stiffened. “He has been dead for centuries.” The assassin gave an evil laugh. “It’s the first time I sense fear from you.” He spatted. “Boccob will rise and you can’t stop it.” The assassin smiled even staring death in the face. His body went limp underneath her. A shudder ran up her spine at the mention of Boccob. A cold wind gushed around her and she had a feeling that this world and hers was in trouble. Boccob was the first creature to possess dark magic and if he gets resurrected, it means the end for her world and earth. “Guards down. Only two left, including the arcanist.” Raine told her, communicating through her telepathy. “Terence?” Kayla was a bit stunned when she heard Byron’s voice inside her mind. “Yes, he is here,” Raine responded as if she heard Byron’s question. “Which side of the house are they keeping her hostage?” Kayla asked Raine. “Left-wing. Her living room.” Kayla followed the wall, her steps cautious as she tried not to make a sound. “What do you want me to do?” Raine questioned. “Stay hidden. I need to see the leader. Whatever you do, don’t come out to save me.” She ended the connection by closing her mind. She slipped her swords back into their sheaths on her back and hid two small daggers in her sleeves. She kicked the door open and found herself staring at two men. One was just a mortal while the other one stunk of black magic. “Archmage.” She acknowledged. She flicked a dagger across the room. The assassin dropped to the ground at Monica’s feet. She didn’t even scream, she kicked him in the face and Kayla admired her. “Kayla Atarnea. The fearless assassin.” The mage observed. “I’ve heard a lot about you. A father as a sorcerer. A mother as an assassin. And a sister who was cast out of the realm.” “Who are you?” She asked the mage, feeling his power frizzling in the air around her. “I don’t think introductions are necessary. You won’t live long to find out.” She felt his power closing around her like he caught her in his fist and squeezed. Every bone in her body screamed at the pressure. “A creature with so much power inside of her yet, she decides to use knives as her weapons.” Kayla laughed at him. “I’m trained to be an assassin. I at least have the guts and skill to use a blade.” She combined her magic with her dagger and flung it across the room. The mage evaded her attack but he made the mistake of letting her go. He tried to reach for her again but she summoned a barrier. She zapped across the room, swords in hands and she cast her magic through the blades. The mage screamed when the blades cut through his skin. The magic and blade burning his skin. He whirled around to look at her. “You never got a chance to observe my kind. My people didn’t exist in the era of mages and spell casters. Sorcerers were tortured by black magic and so they learned about its power and destruction. I have their blood running in my veins.” The mage looked impressed. “I’ve always wanted to know what it would feel like to tear off your skin and drain your magic. Wondering what power, I will get to play with.” Kayla narrowed her eyes. “Even though they warned me. I wanted to be the first to see your power.” Kayla took a step back. He wanted to observe in order to learn. She subsided her magic knowing she only had one way to win this. She is a trained medieval killer. Blades were her comfort. “Give your best shot.” She dared him. Lowering her weapons. She watched him struck her with his power. She felt the scorching touch of scarcely credible black magic all around her. She felt the same type of magic back in her realm when Rubeus sent her out to investigate the coast. She dropped to the ground. Her limbs aching. Blood never scared her. Death was always close and yet, she wasn’t afraid. She caught the look of distress in Monica’s eyes and she knew she couldn’t lose this battle. Not for her or either of them. She knows Raine is watching this right now and she can’t afford to lose her sister again when she just found her. Raine is nothing like her but she’s stronger, survived on the streets and had to fight for food because the tribe abandoned her. She was not going to abandon her sister or make her feel like she’s a disappointment ever again. She planted her hands on the ground and screamed as loud as she could muster. She felt her power reaching its peak. The Archmage was smiling and appreciating the fireworks that he forgot about her. She grabbed a dagger and flew across the room. She buried the dagger in his heart and gave it a twist. She looked him straight in the eye as she watched the life drain from his eyes. “You will never torture me with your magic or my tribe ever again.” Kayla felt another familiar presence beside her sister in the room that unsettled her. She pulled out her last dagger and flicked it across the room. She used her power to stop the dagger right in front of his face. Touching the tip of his nose. “Ezra.”
