Chapter 3. Back To Fight

1116 Words
As Jack stepped into the living room of the old Fontaine family home, the tension had been almost tangible in the air. Everyone stared at Jack as if he had just returned from the flames. Their eyes widened. For five years, they had thought Jack would never come back after not hearing a single word from him—whether he was alive or dead. "What is this bum doing here?!" shouted Sarah's father in anger. He lunged at Jack and pushed him roughly. He almost hit him, but he was immediately pulled roughly away by Tyler. "Keep your hands off him, Old man," Tyler hissed. He stared at Sarah's father so hard that he shook with fear. "Bastard doesn't know any manners!" he shouted. He stepped back to get a safe distance from Tyler. Tyler stood beside Jack with a burly posture and a sharp gaze, making everyone in the room step back. "What are you guys talking about? I heard about—" "That's none of your business, you i***t," Sarah's father cut Jack off quickly. His eyes flashed with hatred and anger. They hadn't expected Jack to come back into their family. Not after they had a brilliant plan to profit from Sarah's marriage to Victor. "That's my business as it concerns me and my wife," Jack insisted. "You should have some shame in referring to my daughter as your wife..." "Honey, leave it alone," his wife's words left him speechless. Her hand reached out and pushed her husband back while she stepped forward to let Jack into the house. "Come in." Jack glanced sharply at Sarah's mother who hurriedly walked into the living room while her husband followed behind. When they sat down, Jack sat down too. Tyler remained standing beside him in an alert manner. His presence in the living room still intimidated Sarah's father. "What did you come back here for?" asked Sarah's mother. "After being gone for so long..." "I came back for my wife," Jack said with confidence. "If it's in your interest to come back here, we can't allow it," he emphasized, showing that he did not want to be contradicted. "Today is divorce day. We have decided. You must divorce Sarah today." Jack's hands clenched into fists at Sarah's mother's words. He had not expected to be welcomed warmly because he knew that the Fontaine family had never liked or recognized him as a son-in-law in their family. However, he also did not want to accept a one-sided decision that his wife was not even there to claim whether it was true news or not. "There will never be a divorce that happens. Whether you've decided or not," Jack said firmly. "Who are you to protest our decision, huh?!" Sarah's father again lost his control and stood up with a burst of anger. At that moment, the main door opened and Victor and his family entered the living room. All the relatives of the Fontaine family stood up and welcomed their arrival with obvious enthusiasm. However, the moment they saw Jack there, various snide glances and mocking whispers began to fill the living room. Jack stood with his tall, well-built body. Staring intently at all the people who were staring sarcastically at him. He knew it was a look of dislike and disdain they were showing him. Victor, a well-built man with a serious face, headed straight for Jack upon seeing him. "What is this i***t doing here? I thought he rotted to death because he couldn't buy food!" he shouted in a condescending tone. He even spat next to where Jack was standing. Tyler, who saw Victor's incivility, immediately stepped forward to teach him a lesson, but Jack's hand was outstretched, giving him the code for Tyler to keep his temper. "Don't mind him. Because as of today, we have decided that Sarah and he are divorced," Sarah's mother reiterated. "I never said that I agreed to it. Divorce or not, it's my decision with her." Jack gave Sarah's mother a sharp look and she immediately felt furious with every reply Jack threw out. Victor growled in annoyance. "Are you deaf?! Whether you agree to it or not, you're getting a divorce from Sarah! And if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm going to be her husband as soon as we get married!" he exclaimed with pride and arrogance. Jack observed Victor closely. "As far as I know, she doesn't like non-muscular men like you..." Jack's words were like a spear driven straight into Victor's chest. Presenting a sense of shame that made his anger explode. His hands clenched into fists and he shoved Jack roughly. "You useless i***t bastard!" he cursed, taking out a large check from his pocket and throwing it at Jack's face. "This is for you," he said in a very cold tone. "Take the money and sign the divorce agreement immediately. We don't have time to waste with someone like you!" All eyes were on Jack, waiting for his reaction. Jack, with a calm, determined expression, grabbed the check and immediately tore it up in front of everyone. The sound of the paper tearing broke the silence in the room and left everyone shocked. "Is he crazy?" whispered one relative in disbelief. "Why would he tear up such a big check?" Victor frowned and looked at Jack with a gaze full of confusion and anger. While Jack was still calm as if he was not at all intimidated by all the cynical stares directed at him. "What do you mean by this?" he asked in a high voice. "You're just a useless husband. Don't you know when to quit, or do you just want more money?" "I don't need your money," he replied in a firm tone. "If she wants a divorce, I will sign the agreement immediately. However, you have no right to force her if she has no intention of divorce." At the same time, Sarah appeared in the doorway, her expression filled with disgust and anger when Victor and his family were in her house. And she was even more shocked, but tried to keep her expression down, when she saw Jack, for the first time in five years. "I will never marry you, Victor," she said in a voice full of emphasis. Her eyes, which had not seen Jack for a long time, now looked at him with a mixture of pain and disbelief. Everyone who was there was surprised by Sarah's arrival and the firm refusal she threw out. Jack was the first to break the silence after Sarah spoke. "Sarah Fontaine," he said softly, "I'm back. I came back to take care of you."
