Chapter 8
Arriving at the office and entering the building, she occupies my every thought. I can't see past my own hand; it's only her I want to see.
Taking the elevator to the top floor. The private investigator should arrive soon; it can't be soon enough for me. Besides my somewhat wild high school and college years, I have been a calm, laid-back, sensible man. I excuse it for youth and stupidity. I am older and should have a handle on my words and actions. I should have learned how to manage my emotions and don't act like an impulsive teenager. This young woman broke down my well-kept walls and the stern control I had over every part of my life. I manage my life just as I manage my company, with routine and control; it's the only dependable thing. My ex-wife only played me to get what she was after. It was never my money or love. I loved her dearly; it made my heart cold and made me see love wasn't for me. What I knew and could count on was business and keeping an arm's length to everyone. To keep myself safe from getting my heart broken again. This young, precious woman turned my world upside down with just one glance. There is no logical explanation for the intense emotions burning in me.
With one glance, I turned into the young man I was in college. In my 20s, I wanted the next hot chick to bang, possessive until I was done with them. f*****g them out of my system and then move on. I recognize the emotion, but it is entirely different. I need her. I want her. Jealousy burns when I think of another man with her. I might as well confess; I am obsessed with finding her and having this Angel in my life.
The knock on my office door took me out of my thoughts. There was Don, my old friend from high school. It was his passion to become a police officer, but he loved the freedom of being his own man as a private investigator. Donald Campbell has also been a great friend to me in business and out. When I needed his help, he always put everyone else aside to resolve my problem. But then again, I have done the same for him in the past, just as I would do in a heartbeat if he needed me.
His booming voice holds mirth as he asks me what urgency brought him across the city in a rush. He is looking at me with something hard to decipher. I know; I didn't leave room for him to say no to me; I basically ordered him to my office. Both he and I know he wouldn't have turned me down, and it makes me smile.
"Hey, old friend! I was a tiny bit rude on the phone, I guess."
"Shane, I could hear your teeth grinding. Tell me what's up and how I can help."
"This will be the first of its kind. The sort of help I need."
I explain it all to Don, and the more I tell him, the more he smiles.
"It's on f*****g time you found a lovely female to spend time with. I will get on it immediately. I understand the urgency you feel so I will have a colleague assist me in this."
Everything is set. Now, it's only for me to wait. I know Don is effective and thorough in his work. He will surely give me all the information I need. I feel a little at ease with that knowledge. We say our goodbyes as Donald is a busy man. As he was about to leave, my secretary tried to stop a young man from entering my office. What in the world? This is new for me. It's not new, but I haven't had anyone this respectless in a long while. The man is young; he almost looks like a teenager. Why not some afternoon entertainment?
I tell my Secretary, Paige, to let the young man enter. I look at the man in question, very displeased. Before I could say what I had in mind, he cheerfully started talking like it was the most natural thing to bust into someone's office. I cross my arms, not saying a word; I just look at him as I lean on my desk. The man stands before me; I don't offer him to sit down. Intruders don't deserve that. Finally, he ran out of words or air; I don't know which. I glared at him and said harsher than I imagined I would.
"so what was your name again?"
"Sorry, sir but my name is Ryan Roberts I believe you know Elizabeth Richardson and she recommended me to pay for a visit and since we met today after your lecture at the college I thought it would be alright."
"Mr. Roberts you thought wrong. I don't recall that I talked to you earlier. I find it disrespectful not to make a business appointment when you clearly begging me for employment. Leave any details with my secretary and I will look at it and I might get back to you. Goodbye!"
I turn away from him and walk around my desk to sit down and get to work. That young man chilled my hot-running emotions with annoyance over his lack of manners.
