Jem Pov     I followed Ren into the woods. I could tell by his mood that he was in a slightly vulnerable state, and he was doing his best to hide it by being quiet. He was the same as me in that way, trying to hide our pain with quiet and sarcastic replies. We were both silent, the quiet between us unsettling as we followed along the path Doris had expertly marked, to the wolf she said had killed himself last night when they caught him. Doris always left subtle clues, a broken branch at a certain angle, a ripped leaf with the side of it pointing to where to go; even some scratch marks or broken pieces of bark on a tree that looked like an animal just stopped to rub up against the tree to get rid of an itch.
