Mom?

Darya rolled out of the bed and made her way to Magda’s room, pressing her ear to the door. Mags had come home the night before, not minutes after she had gotten back from the club, also in a rideshare. It seemed her date with Ares which had started off well had ended with a crazy lady naked watching her and Ares almost do the nasty on the sofa in his office. She had put Mags to bed after plying her with hot tea and snuggles from Jinx but then Darya had stayed up most of the night worrying about her friend, checking in on her multiple times to make sure she hadn’t woken up in tears. Magda was already head over heels for Ares but had been reluctant. Darya was kicking herself for pushing Mags toward him the day before. It was already almost eight and Magda was not usually one to sleep in but her heart was messed up. She sighed sadly for her and listened again to see if she was moving around. She heard the soft snores of Mags in the room followed by the scratching of Jinx on the other side of the door. She pushed it open a crack and let the dog out who immediately raced to the front door where her lead hung. She sighed and put the lead on her little body and took her out into the yard for her to do her business. She scrolled her phone, looking for photos of her sisters on social media and finding nothing. Her sister should have been on a honeymoon after her wedding but she’d seemed to have never gone because the photo of the girls sitting at the pool a couple of days after the ceremony was their last photo. Were they at their father’s bedside while he recuperated from the injuries? She noted an incoming text from the number she now associated with Kostas and wrinkled her nose up. “Good morning beautiful. Can we talk?” “f**k off.” Darya felt a smile twist her lips at her response. “You are prickly first thing in the morning. We should meet for coffee. It might sweeten your disposition.” “A candy factory couldn’t sweeten my disposition towards you. Leave me alone.” She responded back as she leaned against the house while Jinx found a spot to pee and then kicked grass over it. “What is your favorite candy? I’ll buy you the factory and we can test your theory.” She chuckled in spite of herself. “Let’s not. I’m rich and even I couldn’t afford the dental bill for the cavities the amount of sugar needed to make me sweet towards you would take.” “I’ll foot the dental bill. I’ll buy you an entire new set of teeth if necessary.” Before she could respond a photo popped up in their thread and it was of Butch. She couldn’t help it but laugh at the little dog wearing a bow tie. He dressed his dog up. It was not what she was expecting. She giggled at the next image of Butch with one paw up in the air as if waving hello. “The dog is cute. His owner is as ass. Stop bothering me.” “I was hoping to convince you to see me today.” “No. I have plans.” “What kind of plans? Can you change them? We should go to Vegas and get married. The jet is on standby.” She stood upright away from the house and grimaced at the phone. “Did you do drugs for breakfast?” “No but had a wonderful dream last night we patched up our differences and had a huge family.” “Last night I beat a man until he came all over the room.” Put that in your pipe and smoke it, she thought smugly. “Your dreams and mine were not so different.” He attached a wink-face emoji with his comment. “Who said anything about dreaming?” She was aware of how much her smile had broadened when she watched the ellipsis for a solid minute before he commented and his response made her smile fall off. “Pics or it didn’t happen.” “I don’t take pics of my subs.” Now she was smiling again. “I respect their privacy and mine far too much to allow them to feel at risk while in my care.” She felt the tug of the lead as Jinx yanked it trying to get back in the house. She wanted her breakfast. She entered the house and found herself waiting on his response to her comment as she refilled Jinx’s food and water dishes. “Subs? More than one? This tells me you are full of s**t. No virgin on the planet has subs they don’t fuck.” She rolled her eyes at his comment. “It’s a niche speciality but considering the person I’m communicating with I shouldn’t be surprised at how you would miss the fact the world doesn’t revolve solely around your desires or kinks. Not every man needs to f**k, Kostas. For some it can be quite painful or emotionally traumatising to have intercourse.” “How about we sit down and have this conversation face to face. I want to know what your experiences have been. I also want to talk more about yesterday afternoon. Spend the day with me?” “No. I’m busy. I told you this.” “What do you plan to do today?” “Nothing which concerns you.” “Everything about you concerns me. Have lunch with me.” “Can’t.” “You need to eat.” “I will be. Not with you.” “Do you have a date?” She ignored his question. She ignored it the next three times he posed it and then when her phone rang, she laughed in spite of herself. “What are you laughing at?” Magda’s question made her jump and squeal. “Holy s**t,” she clutched her chest giggling. “You scared me.” “You were in your own little world and then started giggling.” Magda came and sat down at the table. Darya wrapped her arms around her shoulders and hugged her and deflected the question, “what did Ares say about the woman in his office.” “Nothing,” she held up her own phone. “Not a single text from him. Not a call. Nothing.” Darya was surprised. “Really? It’s kind of weird.” “Whoever she was, obviously needed mental health assistance but he didn’t even check to make sure I got home okay.” “Oh,” Darya shrugged as she stood up, “I bet he had his guy check in here to make sure you were home safe.” “Maybe,” she said quietly. Darya patted her shoulder and motioned to her own phone. “Kostas Masalis and I were having a discussion on my plans for the day. He asked me out and I declined and he keeps asking me if I have a date.” She looked to the phone and grimaced, “his last text message is to tell me if I date anyone else, he’ll call in a favor with Miklos and therefore I should think hard before making stupid decisions.” Magda grimaced at her. “You literally had two conversations with him in person this week for the first time in eight years and he’s telling you if you date anyone else he’ll have them killed?” “I might have told him I spanked a sub into orgasm last night.” Her blue eyes twinkled with devilry. Magda giggled into her palm and shook her head. “What is with these guys they automatically turn into possessive cavemen?” “I don’t know but I’m going to use it to my advantage when I get my revenge on him.” “You still want to get him back?” “He wanted me to marry his disgusting brother and as a result I got kicked out of my house.” “I don’t know.” Mags shrugged. “It was your father’s idea in the first place. He should have told him off for even suggesting it in the first place, but really, all of this is on your parents. Your dad should never have embezzled his money.” “True.” She shifted on her feet and watched as Magda picked up Jinx and cuddled her close while checking her phone again. “Do you know he told me when I ran into him yesterday, he didn’t have my father killed because he didn’t want to put me and my sisters through the loss of a parent?” “Weird.” Magda sighed and then complained, “I can’t sit in the house all day and wait for his call. I need to do something.” “I have to take Jinx to the groomer this morning. While she’s there I’m going to check out a couple of places nearby for suitability for an office space. I was thinking,” she took a seat at the table, “instead of working coffee shops like we have been, we should buy a building. If we get a place in a location zoned for business and residential, I could turn an upper floor into a condo for me. I know you want a place on the beach and Dimi isn’t coming back any time soon.” She swallowed the large lump in her throat as tears immediately welled at the thought, “but even if I stay here while renovations are being done then I can eventually have a place of my own for me and Jinx.” Magda nodded sadly, “you don’t want to stay together?” “Mags, I would live with you forever but something tells me you are ready for the next chapter in your life to include a man you want to spend a lot of time with. It might not be Ares Winter but you’re ready to fall in love and have a family. Dimi has already had to go and Sienna is dealing with the fallout of Jonas and her mom’s declining health. Everyone is moving on and I want to be settled too.” She took a breath, “You and I are going to be working together every single day and I look forward to it but maybe it’s time we have our own spaces.” “Okay,” Magda agreed as she wiped the corner of her eye frustratedly. “Can I tag along with you today though? Help pick out our office space?” “I’d really like that.” Darya squeezed her hand over the table and then glowered when her phone started ringing again. “He doesn’t quit.” She looked at the number, “he’s calling from an unknown number now.” “Maybe it’s not him.” “It has to be.” “What if it’s Dimi?” Magda sat up suddenly. “Shit.” Darya considered it was possible Dimi switched her number though she doubted it. She answered it quickly on speaker. “Hello?” “Darya?” “Yes.” The voice on the other end sounded familiar and she and Magda exchanged a confused look when Darya shook her head. “Who is this?” “It’s your mother! Do not pretend to not know my voice.” Darya pulled her head back at the tone of the woman. “Excuse me?” “Your father is in the hospital. You need to visit him and make things right.” “No, I don’t think I do.” Darya felt her heart slamming against her ribcage as she spoke to her mother for the first time since the day the cops escorted her off the property for trespassing. “I don’t have a father. I don’t have a mother.” “He was injured and the person who did this struck his face and said it was because of you. You were part of this.” “No. My biological contributor managed to piss off the wrong man by stealing money from him again. I was contacted and asked if I happened to know what he might have done with the money and I very eagerly shared his opinion I am not his daughter and have no familial affiliation with the Pappas family because I do not want to be involved,” she lied. “It is not my fault the people hired to recoup the cash opted to smack him around.” “The medical bills,” her mother sniffed. “He had to have surgery on both of his hands and all of his fingers. All of them Darya. He’ll never be able to use his hands again for his work.” “What a pity.” “Have some compassion!” “For the man who denied me when the police called him and notified him about how I was homeless and living on the streets? I don’t think so. He made it clear he only has two daughters. I am not one of them. Get one of them to help pay the bills.” “They can’t. If Kostas Masalis finds out either of them gave us a single penny, he will claw it all back. We are trying to find a work around but, in the meantime, the hospital is asking for us to pay the daily tab since we don’t have insurance.” Her mother paused, “I saw the news yesterday. You’re a billionaire. You can help.” “No. I’d sooner light my money on fire than put a single dime towards either of you.” “I am your mother. He is your father.” “You are nothing,” Darya shot back furiously. “Nothing. You threw me out because the man you married went through all of your money and his money and then stole from other people and you wanted me to take the fall for it. You wanted me to save your ass by sacrificing myself to a man who raped women. I didn’t steal the money. He did. All of this is his fault. Not mine. Only selfish horrible people would come to the conclusion to sell their oldest daughter to their enemy in order to make restitution for the gambling problems your husband has.” “Your father is a brilliant man.” “He’s a crook. He’s infinitely crooked.” “Darya, please, come to the hospital and see us in person. I’m sure once you see your daddy you will remember how you were daddy’s little girl.” “I was never daddy’s little girl. You confuse me with Lyra.” “She misses you. If you come tomorrow, I’ll make sure your sisters are here to see you.” Darya looked to Magda who shook her head at her vehemently mouthing the words “emotional blackmail” at her. She nodded and took a breath. “What time are visiting hours tomorrow?” “They start at eleven. I can email you a copy of the billing…” She hung up the phone then and looked to Magda incredulously. “I want to know how she got my number.” No sooner had she voiced her question then a text message from the woman who had done her hair and make-up for the night at the club pop up. She held the name up to Magda who groaned. “Looks like Lyra reached out to a friend who connected her with one of my friends and got my number. Said she wanted to reconnect and they thought it was fine but after speaking with other friends, realized it was bullshit. She’s texting to apologize.” “Lyra is doing your mom’s dirty work.” “Looks like it.” Betrayal as fresh as the day her sister refused to help her stabbed her chest. She inhaled deeply and looked to Mags. “I’m going to get ready and then we can get the f**k out of here.” “Are you really going to go tomorrow?” “Yes and,” she grinned suddenly, “I’m going in dressed to the nines. Let’s go shopping. I’m buying the most ridiculously expensive clothing I can find so I can strut into his room and to tell them both to f**k themselves.” Magda pushed back from the chair. “Yes! I’m in. I’ll get ready.” She was bouncing Jinx in her arms, “your mommy’s about to show those losers they messed with the wrong girl. I can’t wait to watch it in action.” Darya considered she was equally excited. Now if only her plans for Kostas were as concrete. She forced herself to remember everything happens in due time. In due time.
