My head turned and my eyes darted around the small kitchen in panic before my eyes fell on an empty liquor bottle on the counter.
He must have brought the bottle along with him and without second thought I grabbed the bottle by the neck and using both hands I gathered all the strength I had in me and slammed the bottle on his head and watched with satisfaction as he slumped to the ground with a loud thud. blood staining his hair and the bottle shattered in pieces, the only part left was it's neck in my hand while I panted.
"Oh my god!" mother screamed. "What have you done?" she started to sob but quickly put a hand to her mouth to stifle it and knelt in front of him, Bruno on the other hand looked too shocked to move.
Mother lifted the hand of the man lying on the floor before letting go and the hand fell back, mother looked up at me with her tear stricken face that was now pale.
"He's dead." she whispered her body trembling but I didn't regret it one bit, not after seeing the bruises that were forming on her neck.
It was then that Bruno snapped out of his shocked state and went to my mother's side. "Mama." he cried out and she looked at him with so much pain in her eyes, she looked at me, at my face and then to my hand that held the neck of the bottle and she quickly stood up and snatched it from my hand.
"Serena you have to leave this village now," she gritted out and I stood there staring at her.
"Serena," she said coming to stand beside me "if the village gets to know about this you know what will happen," she sniffed. "they are going to kill you too, run away and leave as fast as you can before anyone finds out." she wept but I stood there unable to move, it was then that what I did dawned on me and all the blood drained from my face and I felt sick in my stomach.
"Please run away Serena." my mother wailed shaking my shoulders.
"And then what will happen to you?" I managed a croak.
"Don't you worry dear, everything is going to be alright as long as you do what I say." she managed to smile a bit.
"And what about Bruno?" I said looking at Bruno who was silently crying. "No Mama, I'm not leaving you here." I shook my head defiantly looking into her eyes and I felt my own eyes stinging with unshed tears.
*
The three of us ran as fast as we could inside the forest with no idea where to go to, we had managed to sneak out of our house through the backyard unseen by the neighbours since it was already getting dark.
I ran as fast as I could behind my mother and brother, our hearts heavy and fearing that any moment from now someone would appear out of nowhere to arrest us.
It was now getting dark as the sun had already set making it harder for one to see what they were running into until we all got out of breath and stopped to catch our breaths.
"I can sense that we are getting closer, let's keep moving." we heard a deep voice say and then there were footsteps approaching and our eyes widened in shock.
Mother motioned for us with her hand to hurry and hide behind the large Oak tree ahead of us and we started hurrying to it, hopefully away from the persons approaching but just as mother and Bruno managed to get behind it, I, that was behind them stumbled and fell to the ground before I reached the tree.
"And there she is." I heard that deep voice say behind me just as I got up and I turned to see five men, the one in their middle having an aura of power and confidence had a smirk on his face and was holding a walking staff.
"Now take her away." he ordered and the other four men started coming forward and I stepped back.
"No!" my mother screamed from behind the tree and before you know it she was in front of me using her hand to block me from the strangers.
"Please leave my daughter alone she has no fault in this," she started saying and the men halted in their steps confused as they looked at each other. "I'm the one that did it, take me away instead." she declared and I gasped.
'Run away from stranger! Run!'. The voice kept shouting in my head. I supposed that it was my wolf. My father had told me that if it was almost time for me to shift, my wolf would start talking to me.
On a normal day, I would have wanted to punish my wolf for being late but right now I wished more than anything that I could shift right now.
"Mother no! I won't let... " I started to say but that deep voice cut us off.
"Enough!" his voice cut deep across the forest and the voice in my head stopped, he started walking towards my mother and I could feel mother shiver in front of me, to make it worse, Bruno appeared from behind the tree.
"Stay way from them." Bruno grit out and the man halted in his steps, an amused smile on his face. My mother and I took in a sharp breath and I turned to see Bruno holding a branch as if to threaten the men but it was clear that he was shaking.
Mama quickly pulled Bruno behind her back and now she was shielding the two of us.
"Sir what should we do?" one of the men asked and their leader was quiet for a few seconds, he looked at us as if assessing us and then he said.
"We are not going to hurt you Ma'am." he stated coolly and my mother lowered her hand.
"What do you want with us?" she asked.
"Nothing Ma'am, but I can assure you that no harm will come to her, your daughter is safe with me," he stated and I stared at him suspiciously, why would he want to save us? Save me?
"I can help get your daughter to safety, no one will come after her and I will provide you and you son a place to stay."
"And what's in it for you?" My mother asked the same thing that was in my mind.
"I am just a good man," he replied but mother wasn't convinced. "I have enough authority to arrest you, all of you," he said motioning with his hands to the men behind him. "Yet, I decided to help you." he noted with a nod of his head but mother was still quiet.
"If you give yourself away who's going to take care of your little boy?" he asked and I looked down in shame, I was after all the cause of all this. "Your children will never be able to survive alone out there, they need you."
"You didn't bring anything with you, neither clothes nor money and I am sure you must be hungry right now," he continued. And cold. I wanted to add, it was getting dark as the sun had already set. I couldn't blame Bruno when he silently nodded in agreement to what the man said, he was too young to be involved in all these.
We had nowhere to go to, my mother was an orphan and there is no way we could go to our father's pack, they would turn us in the moment we step foot where they are and probably have us burnt alive and we had no idea where they are anyway.
"In a few months everything will be fine and then your daughter can join you." From the way my mother's shoulders slumped I could tell she was giving in, and I couldn't blame her, the way the man spoke, so self assured and confident, and the fact that everything he said was right. But having to be separated from my only family for only God knows how long didn't sound appealing.
"But why do we have to be separated?" I quavered.
"So your mother and brother will live peacefully without having to watch their backs and yours." he stated making me feel guilty and tears fell from my eyes.
Mama turned to look at me and I could tell she was trying so hard to stay strong, using her two hands she wiped the tears on my face as she held her own tears back.
"If you don't want to go," she quavered. "Then don't go, he could be lying." she stated but I didn't think so, he could have all three of us bundled over the shoulders of each man and taken away, yet he chose to help.
I looked at the man who had talked, looking as patient as ever just like the men that were with him and then looked at my mother.
I was the cause of all this, we would never have been in this situation if not for me. I then looked at Bruno and the man's words echoed inside my head. I have already made the boy an orphan by killing his father, why make it worse and take his mother away from him?
"I will go with the man." I declared stepping forward and stopping few feet in front of the man.
'No stay with mother. Don't follow stranger.' was the last thing I heard my wolf whisper as I walked over to the man.
"Please take care of my family." I begged him.
"I will." the man replied and somehow, I felt that he was smiling.
