37. The Book

A piercing scream shattered my sleep. I bolted upright, panting. The nightmare still clings to me like cobwebs, flickering images of ancient symbols and dark rituals dancing behind my eyes. My heart pounds. I have to find that book. Now. I throw off the covers and leap out of bed, bare feet slapping against the cold floor. The house is dark and silent around me. "What's the matter?" Axel sits up on bed. "The book. I think I know where it is now," I breathe. Axel's eyes turn wide. "You do? Shoot. We need to go get it now," he says. Downstairs. It is waiting for us downstairs. I race down the stairs, followed by Axel. My heart thudded in my chest, nearly choking me with each beat. So close. I am so close. I can almost hear it calling my name.
