"Of course, what is it?," he says. "I said some really unpleasant words to mom earlier today. Now I can't go to sleep because of regret. His father chuckles, then turns back to Leah. "What happened that made you say bad things to your mother? You are always in control of your emotions." He sounds genuinely surprised.
