Chapter 5 New Label

1140 Words
Wanting so badly to speak with the king, Harold gets impatient when he doesn't find him anywhere in the kingdom. He finds his brother, Dean, and asks him where the king has gone. "He has gone to The Sacred Confluence," Dean says."Someone informed him something has happened that needs his attention at once. It seemed urgent." "Brother, do you happen to know what urgent matter they want to talk about?" asks Harold. "I haven't the slightest idea. All I know is that it is urgent." "Maybe it is just one of those meetings held at the Sacred Confluence every month." "No, this one wasn't planned at all. It just came up today. I saw father look tense when he heard whatever it is that he was told. Anyway, what are you doing here, aren't you supposed to be studying your future Queen or something like that? oh, maybe you have finally gotten your Ph.D. in future Queen study." Harold conjures a ball of water in his right hand and splashes it forcefully on his brother's face. "Shut up." Then he suddenly says, "Do you think we could sneak into the Sacred Confluence and listen to what they are planning?" He asks Dean hopefully. Dean pauses in the act of wiping his face, looking positively horrified. "No, no. Have you forgotten what happened last time we tried to do that? It was your idea that time too. I haven't forgotten and I am not going through that again." Remembering the incident Dean is talking about, Harold bursts out laughing. Centuries, ago when he and Dean were just little boys, they had sneaked into one of the meetings held at the Sacred Confluence. Turning themselves into old kings with Long garments and crowns on their heads, they had entered not knowing the place is heavily protected against intruders. They had gotten kicked by invisible feet back to their home and stuck for several days in the old men's forms, crowns and all. Divine beings are always on guard for threats from various groups with different powers. They are always trying to show each other who is more powerful than the other, so none of them can stay in any place without making sure they would be safe. The weakest ones suffer more because they are taken advantage of by anyone who wants to use them for their own good. So to prevent any unwelcome intruders, the Sacred Confluence is also protected all the time. The boys had learned that to the cost of their dignity. Harold then says, "We were just little boys that time. I am sure we can find a way to listen now without getting our ass kicked by invisible feet." He looks carefully at Dean, hoping he will agree. Instead, Dean tells him to behave more like a prince. Princes are not supposed to go peeping and prying into things they shouldn't. "Why are you suddenly interested to know what is happening there after so many years? I've never heard you mention it since that time we were children. Why now?" Dean adds. Harold contemplates the question for a while. "I don't know. I just feel I need to know what is happening in that place," he says in a low voice. An image of a very beautiful girl forms in his mind. He wonders what Leah is doing now. He wishes he was like his father who can see what people are doing in his mind whenever he wants. He remembers the way she always practices smiling in front of the mirror, not wanting to show the sadness inside her when she goes out to be around other people. The thought gives his heart a painful twinge. He needs to protect her and make sure she is happy. He doesn't want to see her suffer any longer. 'Am I falling in love with Leah?' he wonders to himself. 'Yes, this must be what love feels like.' After a restless night filled with nightmares, Leah wakes up early before the sun rises. She cleans the house then prepares breakfast for everyone. She still can't believe her father is dead. She keeps asking herself why he died at the same time as the king. 'Is there a disease outbreak in Cairo? are there more people that have died that I haven't just been told about? ' she wonders. When everything in the house is in order, Leah takes a hot shower to soothe her muscles. She prepares a small bag filled with clothes and other things she might need during the short stay in Cairo. Her mother has left her some money to use for transport under her bedroom door, the usual way she always does it. Every time she wants to give Leah something, she just leaves it outside her bedroom door. Before, this used to make Leah feel like she is being treated like a dog, but now she has gotten quite used to all the family's treatment that nothing they do affects her much. Knowing Kevin is going to cry to go with her if he sees her leave with a bag, Leah is thinking about leaving for Cairo before he wakes up when she bumps into Mavis right outside her door. "Ouch! b***h are you blind? Watch where you go!" Mavis shouts. Mavis is the one trying to enter Leah's room without knocking and she even gets upset? Leah is not in the mood to deal with her right now. She has other things to think about. She picks her bag and tries to go but Mavis grabs her roughly by the front of her dress. "Aren't you going to say any smart things to try and shut me up? I hate you. And am happy your father has died. My only regret is that it wasn't you who died. Better die, b***h. That way, you won't have to worry about where to go when you get kicked out of here." Leah didn't think Mavis's hatred for her reached this extent. She tries to get out of her grasp but Mavis holds on tightly to her dress, using it to push her around almost making her fall. Leah can't bear it anymore. She kicks out Mavis's feet from under her and Mavis is forced to let go of Leah to have a better fall. "You orphan, you hurt me! John! Come and get back at this b***h for me. Being an orphan has turned her so violent! come teach her a lesson!" Mavis shouts hysterically from the floor. Leah thinks she has gone from dumb to mad. She gets her bag again. Straightening up she sees John standing in front of her, eyes narrowed and arms folded across his chest. "What did you do to my sister, orphan girl?". These two will never grow up.
