Chapter 1

Liana: “Mother, the man is not even coming over to take me as his bride. You can’t just expect me to accept such a marriage!” I snapped, looking at my mom who wouldn’t even spare me a glance. The fact that she didn’t even care, despite knowing that our marriage was one of an alliance, and yet, he wasn’t doing his own part, was something that made my chest ache. “It was your idea not to have a wedding, Liana. I doubt that he would have pressed on you to have one considering that you said that you didn’t want one.” She said, making me pinch the bridge of my nose. “The two of you had a proper engagement party. You both got introduced as the two who were going to get married for the peace treaty to begin after the years of war. The man sent his beta to pick you up as per customs. It is not unnatural when it comes to marriages like yours.” I looked out the window where his beta stood by the car, Beta Cosimo, the Alpha’s trusted friend as far as we’ve heard. I ran my hand over the dress that I was wearing. It was a white, reaching just over my knees, I didn’t bother with a wedding dress, but it was my mom who insisted that I wear a white dress. It, just like the paper that I signed, were signatures of my death. “The man would be waiting for you in the house. The two of you are going to constitute your marriage, and in time, you are going to be fulfilling your duties by giving him heirs. This is going to be the one way to ensure that it doesn’t break.” She said, making my stomach churn at the idea that she was throwing. “I agreed to this marriage for the sake of my family. The last thing that you expect me to do is constitute a marriage with a man like him, and giving him a child is not something that I aim to do, mother.” I said, and she sighed. She took my hand in hers, gently squeezing it. “I agreed to this marriage to make sure that you were safe, that our family was safe of the ongoing war that’s been on for years. Alessandro is far too young to be taking the place of Alpha and I…” I had to stop myself from speaking ill of my father, knowing that it bothered my mother. However, I couldn’t, the man not only left my mother with me and my little brother, how was barely ten by now, alone at the mercy of the man who was to take me as a wife, but that he also didn’t care whether or not we were harmed in this war. The man barely cared about the mistresses that he had and the pleasure that he got out of them. It still bothered my mother when I spoke wrong ab “Then you are going to make it work.” She said, making my stomach churn. “It is too late to back out of this now. Your father already left the country to go home and your husband is waiting for you. And if you aim to keep Alessandro safe, you know that this is the best way to do it.” “You are really sending me off like some package?” I asked, and she took a deep breath. “Do you really not care about how I feel about this marriage, mama?” “Remember to do your duty, to both the family and your husband.” She said, not bothering to answer, I shouldn’t have expected her to do so to begin with. I nodded and walked out of the house, ignoring the clench that I ran my fingers through my hair, fixing my curls as Cosimo opened the door for me. I nodded in thanks before getting inside the car. And closing the door, I watched as the man got inside the car. I took a glance at the window, hoping to see my mother see me off. Sadly, she had already gone inside the house… **************************** “Where the Alpha?” I asked, walking inside the house alongside Cosimo. “On the way. He was out, tending to a meeting.” He said, and I nodded, knowing not to comment about it. The day was bad enough as it was anyway. “I am back home,” He said, walking inside the house. I turned to face him and he nodded at his beta, dismissing him. I took a deeper breath than I intended, fighting back the clench that I felt in my chest as I didn’t know what to expect from the man. “I trust that your trip went smoothly?” “I expected you to be the one to pick me up. I was surprised by Cosimo being the one to come.” I said, and he raised an eyebrow. “It went well, regardless, thank you.” He nodded, and looked at someone behind me. I turned to see four maids standing. Their eyes were to the ground, waiting for whatever order their Alpha was going to give them. “These are your assigned maids. They are going to help you settle in your room. If there is anything that you need, all you need to do is speak to them. I am heading off to work.” He said, making me frown in confusion. “I thought that you just came back…” “I have something else to take care of,” he said, stopping me. “I’ll leave you to settle in. Have a nice day…”
