Party One

Five: Ellie

I didn’t attend the welcome home party as I was to upset. I didn’t even say one word to my parents when we got home. I ran straight up to my bedroom and locked my door. Throwing myself onto my bed. I cried myself to sleep. It was the knocking on my door that woke me up. I opened my eyes to a dark room. “Go away.” I shout out as I pull the pillow over my head. I didn’t want to see or talk to my parents right now. I was still too raw as something that they had known about since my mom was pregnant with me. I just don’t understand why they had never said anything to me to begin with.

“Boo, let me in.” I hear Lexi at my door. I jump up turning on my bedroom light. I race to the door throwing it open, pulling her in and relocking the door. “Oh my, what happened to you?” She asks me as I pull her to my bed sitting down. It felt like I had diarrhea of the mouth as everything just came out of me along with the tears, gasping for breaths. Lexi just sits there staring at me with her jaw dropped open. When I finish, she pulls me into a hug as I continue to cry my eyes out. “That is so messed up. What are you going to tell Thad? I mean because of your ranking you would have to break up with him anyway.” I sniffle pulling out of her embrace. I shake my head. “I don’t know what I’m going to tell him. I haven’t even seen him since yesterday after my Alpha ranking was announced.”

I watch as Lexi gets up off my bed and opens my closet door disappearing into my closet. “What are you doing?” I ask her as she pops her head back out looking at me with a smile on her face. “I’m getting your outfit together. Your brother and soon to be husband will be here soon to pick us up for the party.” She says with a small smile on her face. I gasp as I hear her. “You knew. How did you know?” I ask as she pops her head back out. “Of course, I knew. Alpha Henry announced it at the Welcome Home party this afternoon. He was a little upset that you were not there, but your parent’s made excuses for you.”

“Are you kidding me!” I scream and throw my pillow at the closet where Lexi disappeared. She pops her head back out with a frown and a huff. She slowly walks back towards me while she plays with her fingers. “Look I know this is not what you wanted out of life.” She bends down in front of me and puts her hands on my knees. “Let me tell you what I see when I look at you. You, Ellie, are the one I look up to. No matter what happens in your life you have this knack to always do the right thing. You always look out for others and push us to do our best. I couldn’t think of anyone else that would be perfect to lead a pack.” I look at her and smile a little. “There is only one problem.” I say covering my face. “I don’t even like him. He is such an a*s.”

Lexi pulls my hands away from my face. “I know he always picked on you. I know it always hurt your feelings and angered you.” Lexi says as she finally gets up and sits down next to me. “What do you want to do?” She asks me and I lower my hands to look at her. “I want my life back. I want to go back in time and get bad grades. I want to be able to marry Thad like we had planned and have a family. I want to go to college and get my medical degree.” I sigh as I look at my best friend. She nods her head. “Is there any way out of this for you?” she asks me, and I shrug my shoulders. “I don’t know. I don’t think so.”

“Well, I tell you what. Let’s go out have fun tonight and tomorrow we will hit the old toms and see what we can find.” I sigh and agree with my friend. “Okay, cutting loose maybe just what I need to blow off a little steam.” Lexi jumps up and twirls around the room in joy going back into my closet. She comes back out with a slim green, emerald dress that goes down to mid-thigh with wedge sandals. “Go get showered so you can get ready.” I nod my head and head to the bathroom.

I had just finished putting on the final touches of my make-up when I head the doorbell. “They’re here come on.” Lexi jumps up and down pulling on my hands. “Ellie, Lexi your escorts are here.” I hear my mom yell up the stairs. I ground my teeth as I am still so mad at my parents that I cannot hold it in. My bedroom door swings open to my little sister as she smiles at me. “You look good.” She says jumping on my bed once again. I shake my head at her. “You break my bed, mom and dad will not be too happy with you brat.” I say as I push her down and she laughs.

As we walk down the stairs Lexi is talking about dancing the night away. I’m really trying to pay attention to her but as soon as the front door comes into view there, he is standing right next to my brother. My heart hammers in my chest and I take a deep breath hardening my heart. I frown at his smiling face. Lexi runs out in front of me jumping on my brother as they both laugh. I watch as Caleb takes a step forward and I hold out my hand to stop him. “What are you doing here?” I say through clenched teeth. He gives me a dazzling smile. “Here to escort you to the party tonight.” He tells me and all I can feel is the anger rolling in my tummy. I want to slap the smile off of his face so badly I can taste it.

That is when I feel someone at my back I turn to look and see my father looking very old and tired. “Is everything okay here?” he asks sounding so old that I flinch. This is not my normal bear of a father. He looks so defeated by life right now that I just give up tonight. “It’s great dad. Caleb is just here to pick me up for the party. I’ll be home by eleven.” I say as I turn back around. “You are with Caleb, your betrothed. You do not have a curfew while with him.” I ground my teeth in anger as Caleb is staring at me smiling. I so want to rack my nails down his pretty boy face. I relax my muscles and smile as I turn back to my father. “Okay” I rise on my toes and kiss him on his cheek. “See you for breakfast.” I say as I follow everyone out the door.

We are walking down the sidewalk as I feel Caleb try to grab onto my hand. I turn to him and throw his hand off of me. “Let’s get one thing straight. I don’t like you, I don’t want to marry you, but I will for my family’s sake. I have two weeks before my nightmare of being yours starts. So do me a favor and leave me the hell alone until then.” I scream at him and storm away. “What the hell was all of that about?” Lexi asks catching up to me. I sigh as I look over to her and I shrug my shoulders. “You know if I remember correctly, you had the biggest crush on Caleb when we were in middle school.” I quickly put my hand over her mouth as I feel my face turn bright red. I stare at her as she giggles under my hand. “You promised to never say that out loud. Anyway, that was before I knew him and just what a man w***e he really is.”

I hear her laughing and I just turn to look at her rising my eyebrow at her. “Oh, come on Ellie. We are talking about a future Alpha of our pack. Of course, he is going to sow his wild ways until he has to take up the reigns of leading. I’ll make a bet with you though.” She says staring me in my eyes still laughing and skipping down the sidewalk next to me. We made it to the pack house where the party is at. I enter with one thing on my mind, Thad. He must be so mad right now that I hurt just thinking about it. We walk around for a while until I spot him standing by himself looking sad.

“I’ll be back” I say to Lexi making my way to Thad. When he raises his head his eyes lock onto mine then he looks over my shoulder and frowns. I look over and see Caleb staring at us. I ground my teeth once more grabbing Thad’s hand and dragging him to a quiet corner where we can talk. “What do you want Ellie?” he growls out at me in an angry tone. It surprises me and I flinch back looking at him. I look down feeling the tears filling my eyes. “I didn’t want any of this to happen.” I say looking up into his face. “Then run away with me. We can go to my uncle’s pack and live there. No one will bother us.” He says grabbing ahold of my hand.

The tears make their way down my face. “I can’t.” I whisper out and see the rage come back over his face. “Why? Don’t you love me anymore. I thought you wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. Have a family, grow old together. You as a doctor and me as a Gamma leading a group of warriors.” He says bringing me close to him. “Please Ellie, don’t leave me. I love you.” I cry even harder soaking his shirt holding onto him tightly as his head is buried in my hair breathing me in as I’m breathing him in.

I pull away from him and notice his gaze once again is over my shoulder. I know who he is staring at, and I won’t give him any of my attention not when Thad needs it all right now. I touch his cheek and he look down at me. “Hey, look at me only at me. I am right her by your side.”

“Yeah, you are.” He tightens his hold on me. “But for how long Ellie? Are you going to run away with me?” I sigh and shake my head. “I have to think of my family, my little sister.” I say hoping he understands that it’s not what I want but what I have to do. “If I don’t go along with this marriage then my whole family will be kicked out as Rouges.” I say hoping he can understand what I’m saying. “I can’t let that happen.”

“So, you have chosen, and I am not the one.” He says releasing me trying to walk away from me. I race after him grabbing him by his arm pulling him to a stop. He turns and yells right in my face scaring me. “What Ellie!” I take a step back and just stare at him. “I don’t want to lose you.” I whisper out as he just stares at me. “You lost me the moment you reached Alpha rank. But I will promise you this.” He says taking a threating step towards me. “I won’t let you go that easily. I will find a way to make you mine.” I smile at him as I see the anger wash off of his face replaced by a smile. “That is what my plans are also.” I say as he opens his arms to me, and I walk into them once more.
