*Angel’s POV*
It was the last day of school before the break, and I should have felt a sense of relief. But instead, all I had was a gnawing tension building in my chest. Everything had been off lately—Riaya, Kaya, even myself. I’d spent months convincing myself that things would sort themselves out, that I’d figure out how to deal with my mess of feelings, but nothing was clearer.
I walked to our usual spot where Kaya waited. Her bright blonde hair and confident stance usually made her stand out, but today, something was wrong. When I saw her face, my blood ran cold. A deep purple bruise marred the skin under her left eye. It was ugly, dark, and swollen.
“Who did this to you, Kaya?” My voice came out sharper than I intended, but the sight of her like that twisted my insides.
