Chapter 2:
“You can talk to her? With just a touch?” The queen stared wide-eyed between me and my Mom and then she looked at her husband.
“Sounds familiar.” The King murmured and chuckled to himself.
“She is a witch right?” The Queen demanded looking between our faces again.
“Well not exactly…” My Mom flushed a bright red.
“Excuse me? What isn’t clear here?”
“She’s different.” My mom said softly looking away and pulling her hand from mine.
“Witch?” I couldn’t hold it back. It burst from my lips like vomit word vomit as my mom calls it.
“Yes Witch..” The Queen indicated to herself and then to my mom and then she pointed to her husband. “Vampire.” And then her gaze fell on me. “But you don’t seem to be either but something is strange. Why is that Taylor, why does your daughter’s aura look something like a little bit of both?”
“Because she is now please let it go!”
“Let it go? After all this time? Why did you never tell me?”
“It wasn’t safe! We haven’t been safe! He didn’t know she existed until recently, please I have to keep her safe! Nobody can know, nobody can know!” she cried jumping up to her feet. “You can’t tell anyone swear it to the Goddess you won’t speak of this any further!”
“How do I know what to teach her?”
My Mom looked down at me for one long minute and then sighed. “Teach her both.” She said quietly sinking down into her chair.
“What?!” another word vomit.
“It’s that bad you won’t even tell me?”
“No it's worse than that I wished we had stayed off the radar but nothing I can do now.”
“Can you at least tell me who?” The Queen asked, pleading with her sister.
“Master Sebastian.” She whispered ever so softly.
“No!”
“Yes! Please let it go, don't speak no more on it, just hide us away and keep us safe. I implore you please as my loving sister do this for me!”
“Fine! CARL!” she shouted and a man in a flourishing green robe suddenly appeared in the room.
“Yes your majesty?”
“Please empty out wing R and show these ladies to the rooms with the adjoining door and report back to me after they are settled!” she waved her hand as a dismissal.
“I will walk you both out to the main corridor and send a guard with you after they have moved a few people around to give you extra privacy.”
I smiled at her. “Thank you Queen.”
“Please, you are my niece after all, call me Aunt Elena at least in privacy.” She smiled sweetly at me and brushed back a stay lock of my dark unruly hair out of my eyes. “Such lovely eyes and hair.” She murmured.
“Back at you.” I grinned and shot my mom a sly smile. She shook her head.
“Don’t start with the Jokes Becka!”
“Yes mom.”
We walked out of the building through a corridor and out into another rather busy corridor. The queen had an arm around me and her other arm around my mom as we walked out and we received startled looks of confusion.
I shot my mom a panicked look and she gave me a weak smile.
“My Dear Sister Taylor and her Daughter Rebecca have come to visit. I expect everyone to treat them as per their royal blood deems spread the word they are not to be bothered!” and with that everyone started scurrying away.
I looked at my mom questionably but she just sighed.
“Thank you, Your Majesty it is rather late and we should be getting sleep.”
“But the day has just started..” she seemed puzzled for a minute then sighed. “Ahhh on a human schedule are you? Well get a few hours sleep then I expect you at the royal diner by three-fifteen what better way than to welcome you two here then to do it on this little one special day!” she squeezed my shoulders and released us as a guy with red hair and freckles appeared.
“Your majesty the Wing requested is all clear. I’m here to guide them to their rooms.”
“Very well Tom.” She nodded at him then smiled at the both of us. “You two are in very good hands, go rest up and we shall see you very soon!”
As soon as Tom led us away I turned to my mom. “Does she mean three-fifteen in the morning? When it’s still dark outside?”
She sighed and shook her head giving me a shallow laugh. “Darling we are creatures of the night, we were meant to roam the night. I hope I haven’t done too much damage to you in teaching you the wrong things!”
“Mom we are really Witches?” I didn’t want to even think of the other term The Queen had used to explain her husband.
“Darling I’m a Witch.” She grabbed my hand and squeezed. “You however are a mix of Witch and Vampire it doesn’t happen very often most Witches can’t get pregnant by a Vampire but every now and again by some miracle they do reproduce that’s what happened when you came to be I never let anyone know I just left as soon as I learned what happened I couldn’t risk him finding out about you and now that he has I fear the worst!”
“I didn’t even know I had a Dad.” I replied very quietly.
“Oh baby girl I’m so sorry I couldn’t tell you I couldn’t tell anyone but your royalty you should have grown up in a palace with ponies and everything you could have dreamed of but I was so scared but Elena will keep us safe I know she will I’m just so glad it was her men we walked into not someone else’s the outcome could have been way worse thank the Goddess!”
“Mom I still don’t understand any of this! All this time we have been running my whole life and now you expect me to hold up in some place with Witches and Vampires?” I shuddered and wrapped my arms around myself. “I feel like the walls are suffocating me.” I didn’t mean to add that last part; it slipped out another word vomit I seem to be having many of those today.
My mom’s piercing gaze studied me and for the rest of the walk we didn’t talk she just kept looking at me as if she was trying to figure something out the guard remained silent the whole trip and I suddenly felt really embarrassed so when we stopped outside of one of the many doors we had past and he spoke I nearly jumped out of my skin.
“Miss. Black you’re in here and Mrs. Black you are in that room down there a little further.” He smiled at the both of us and opened the door for me handing me a key to the room.
“We can’t stay together?” I asked, suddenly very scared. I had never left my mom not like this ever since the day I was born.
“Sweetheart there is an adjoining door I will find it on my side and knock so you can find it on yours I will see you once I go to the bathroom.” She smiled at me and grabbed me up in a hug before I could protest.
“Mom!” I groaned and blushed at Tom’s sly smile.
“Love you see you in a few minutes.”
I nodded as she released me. “I love you too.” I bit my lip and walked through the door and when I walked in I couldn’t move much past the door. The space was so big and lush and so grand I had never been in a place like this so I had nothing to compare it to.
There was a huge chandelier hanging from the center of the room I stood in, there were marble end-tables everywhere. Some had vases of flowers, others had picture frames with works of art on them, the walls were covered in pictures of nature and animals. As I stepped further into the room I realized there were four doors in the room. The one I had just walked through and then there was one to the right of the fancy plush green velvet couch one across the room and one on the left hand wall.
I walked over to the right side of the room and opened the door which turned out to lead to a spacious bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and huge shower along with a closet I’m assuming is where you would keep your toiletries. I walked back to the great room and headed to my right again and opened the door that was directly across from the door I came in through and this door led to a bedroom that was Huge! A huge king sized bed made with some expensive bedding I couldn’t even name. The theme in the room was green and they stuck to it through each room. The bedding was all the same shade green as the walls and the plush soft carpet. Leaving the bedroom I went to the last door just as I heard a knock from the other side. I froze then I heard my mom’s voice.
“Becka open up and let me in, we still need to talk.”
I opened the door and was greeted with my mom’s tense smile. “What’s up? I was just exploring the massive room well rooms I guess.”
Mom brushed past me and shut the door behind her keeping me from her room and she walked over to the couch and sank down then patted the spot next to her. “Come sit let me tell you a bedtime story.”
I walked over slowly and sat down next to her. “Mom…”
“Hush Becka let Mommy explain.” She waited for my nod before continuing. “It was eighteen years almost nineteen now I was engaged to your Father I almost married him but I found out about you right before the wedding and I ran and as you know we have been on the run since. When I was pregnant it was easy to find some humans to shelter me and accept me as one of their own. That was easy but once you were born it was harder to find shelter. Not a lot of people had sympathy for us so I did what I had to. I made us enough money for us to stay posted in a spot just long enough to make enough to move on and then we would move on. I know none of this is new to you but I need you to understand I kept trying to tell you Witches and Vampires were real but you were so stubborn you had no idea of this world but I tried to keep giving you hints even using my magic in front of you but you never seemed to catch on. I am sorry as your mom I should have told you long before now but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. On my last trip home from that bank I ran into one of Sebastian’s groupies and he almost didn’t recognize me but I know he did so I ran home swooped you and what little we could grab and we ran to get as far away from there as possible the only thing is he followed me home he seen you and knew right away what had happened I don’t doubt he has already reported back to Sebastian and if he knows about you there won’t be any stopping him but he must be stopped! We can’t live like that! Not with him! I am so sorry!” she started cracking and suddenly her tears were overwhelming and I started to cry too and once the water works started there was no stopping it.
I curled up to her, my head on her chest and I let out rib cracking sobs, my whole body quivering my toned muscles all tensing with each sob.
“He hit you Mommy? Why would he do that? How can anyone do that?” I had seen it in her eyes the demons that haunted her dreams and made her scream out at night.
“Because darling he has no Heart he only wants what can benefit him and marrying me would have added to his massive fortune and he wanted it, still wants it if I’m correct. I used to think he loved me but looking back I know it wasn’t true there just wasn’t any way to get to his heart, he has it locked in a box in his chest being unused because he feels that is a weakness to love. He told me himself the very last night I ever spent with him and I don’t regret running. I just regret not getting you protection before now but I thought I could keep you a secret by myself but it turns out I was very very wrong!”
“Mom you did an amazing job, you're the best mom ever and I trust you with my whole life don’t let what other people think tear you down. You are so brave and so very strong. I have seen how much we have struggled but you have always been tough, and confident. We will get through and somehow we always manage to do just that. Don’t let your Sister make you think anything less of yourself you’re the best mom and I mean it, and no matter what we have to do I will be strong and face it as I should but you need to remain strong to I love you mom and I just want the best for you.”
She reached down and pulled on my chin making me look at her and she wiped my tears off my face and then kissed each of my eyes. “My sweet little girl, how did you become so wise?”
“I had an excellent teacher.” I replied and we both broke into giggles.
“Let’s get some rest before Elena wants us to meet her.”
“Oh yeah what’s up with the ‘were creatures of the night’ nonsense?” I asked. “I mean just because you’re a witch doesn’t make you a creature of the night.”
“Darling anything magical is part of the Dark World. You will understand soon we flourish at night and by day it seems as if the sun sucks out our energy.” She gave me a meaningful look and suddenly I understood.
“That’s why I would get those “Attacks” in summer?” I asked.
“Yes the sun was zapping you of your energy so your lungs would struggle as would your brain because the sun is too powerful but I couldn’t keep you on a night time schedule we had to blend with the humans.”
I nodded and yawned. “I understand.” I laid my head back on her chest and our conversation ended and we both slowly sank into unconsciousness.
