Catherine refused immediately, "I appreciate the offer, but I cannot accept the position."
A frown appeared on the Dean's face, and he said, "Mr. Campbell is young but he is under a lot of pressure, Dr. Winston. You must realize that he could suffer a heart attack if you reject his offer. What's more, it is not wise to offend such a powerful man.
"Dr. Winston, you have to know that, as an employee of this hospital, you represent the entire hospital. If you can cure Mr. Campbell, I promise I will promote you to Chief Physician!”
Catherine sighed. She knew that she had no chance to say no.
Finally, Catherine agreed to accept the promotion. On her way returned to the consulting room, she passed the waiting room and saw Leonard sitting on one of the benches with his legs crossed. His posture was very graceful, and a crowd of female patients was huddled at the entrance to watch him.
When Leonard saw Catherine, he stood up at once and walked towards her with a smile, and he said, "Nice to see you again, Miss Winston.” Leonard was getting so close that when he talked, Catherine could feel his warm breath blew on her face.
"Don't pretend to be surprised, Mr. Campell. We both know why you are here,” Catherine said with a mockery tone.
Leonard shrugged, "I am actually here for your medical advice, Dr. Winston," he said.
Catherine was speechless. She wanted to say, "Didn't we already talk about it? I know you have a mental disorder, but I am not a psychologist or a psychiatrist."
But Catherine knew that she would get into trouble if she said so, so she said, "Take that seat, please."
Leonard nodded and returned to his seat, while Catherine sat down beside him. She turned to face him and asked in a cold, clinical tone of voice, "What seems to be the trouble? Please describe the symptoms you have as specific as you can."
As expected, Leonard didn't reply to her directly. He said, "Catherine, you have to know that I did everything for you. After you left last night, I..."
Catherine rolled her eyes and crossed her arms beneath her breasts, she interrupted Leonard impatiently, "Wait a minute, sir," she said, "If there's nothing's wrong with you, please leave now. I don't want to waste my time hearing your nonsense!"
"No, I don't feel good,” Leonard insisted. "I miss you so much."
When Catherine heard what Leonard said, she felt disgusted. She stood up and stared at him, unhappily. Then, in a firm tone of voice, she said, "I told you that if you have nothing else to say, you need to leave. I have patients waiting to see me."
Leonard pressed his lips tightly together. After a moment, he said, "Catherine Winston, I am serious. I want to get you back, Cathy!" Catherine shook her head, angrily. Same Leonard – she thought – He thinks he owns the whole damn world! She pointed her finger at the door and said, "Get out!" As she turned her head to look where she had indicated, though, she noticed that the Dean was standing outside the door with a flattering smile.
The Dean walked over and asked Leonard if he was satisfied with Catherine's diagnose – and to his and Catherine's surprise, Leonard nodded. He smiled and said, "I do have one request, though. I want Miss Winston to be my personal surgeon."
Yes, you wish! – Catherine thought, but before she could get a word in, the Dean said, "Sure thing, Mr. Campell. That's no problem at all!"
"But what about my other patients?" Catherine asked anxiously.
The Dean gave her a warning look and said, “Do you honestly think the department cannot run without you? Don't worry. I will assign your patients to other doctors. Just take good care of Mr. Campell." The Dean turned to Leonard and put on a big, flattering smile.
Catherine looked away, helplessly. She knew that she had no choice but to be Leonard's personal surgeon.
Leonard looked at Catherine. He offered her his hand and said, “Come on, let's go.”
Catherine looked at his hand nervously, sighed, and reached out for it. Leonard gave her hand a gentle squeeze, and Catherine felt tears of desperation begin to pool in her eyes. In the past, all she had wanted was for him to hold her hand. The situation had changed, though, and now that he was holding her hand, all that she wanted was to be get rid of him.
Why does nothing ever turn out the way that I want it to? - Catherine thought helplessly.
Leonard led Catherine to his car, and after an hour-long car ride, Catherine fell asleep.
When Leonard saw that she was sleeping, he told the driver to slow down and lowered her body so that her head was resting in his lap.
Leonard brushed Catherine's hair out of her face so that he could get a better look at her. His eyes softened as he touched her cheeks. He sighed and said, "How I wish you could be like this and stay with me forever." A glimmer of frustration flashed in his eyes.
When they arrived at Campbell Castle, Catherine was still sleeping and she didn't wake up until Leonard tried to pick her up. Catherine frowned, and she said, “What are you doing, Leonard Campbell?”
Catherine looked up, and when she saw the castle, she was surprised. Campbell Castle was the place where Leonard had grown up, where his grandparents now lived. She had only been here a few times because Leonard always said that she was unworthy of being in it.
So why did he take me here now? – she wondered.
