The woman turned to look at the onlookers and said, "I want everyone to look at this woman. Catherine Winston approached and seduced my husband. She took advantage of her position at this hospital, and now my husband visits her here almost every day! Not only that, but now that I've confronted her, she refuses to take responsibility for her actions!"
Catherine thought – I've never taken advantage of my position at this hospital! She looked the woman straight in the eyes and said, "Sorry, Is there a misunderstanding? I've never..."
"You still deny it?" the woman snarled.
The doctors and nurses around them began to look at Catherine with contempt and disdain as if she really was the type of person the woman was making her out to be. One of the nurses said, "I wouldn't expect such behavior from someone with such an innocent-looking face."
"You may know a person's face, but not his heart," a doctor replied. "It's dangerous for the hospital to have such a doctor on staff. After all, who would want to be their patient?"
Catherine signed helplessly. She already had numerous complaints on her record, and she was beginning to think that this would be the straw that would break the camel's back.
The more the woman said, the angrier she became, and it was apparent that she wanted to slap Catherine. Catherine tried to run away, but she forgot that she was wearing high-heeled shoes, and she ended up slipping and spraining her ankle. The pain struck like an ice pick, and she stumbled and fell.
The woman walked over to slap her in the face, but before she could, Leonard stepped in between them. "It's you," Catherine murmured as he helped her up.
Leonard glared at the woman, but the woman ignored him. She gave Catherine a dirty, spiteful look, and said, "You really are an unprofessional slut! How many men have you seduced at this hospital?"
Catherine looked at Leonard, and from the expression on his face, she thought he would hit the woman, but he was able to keep his temper in check. He stared intently at the woman until she lowered her eyes, and then he said, "I don't ever want to hear about you slandering this woman again. Is that clear?"
The woman was frightened by the look in Leonard's eyes, but she wasn't wholly cowed… not yet. She smirked and said, "She has the spirit of a fox, and that is why you are fascinated by her."
Leonard frowned and said, "You are stupid. Catherine Winston is my girl. What the f**k is your problem?"
Catherine felt a headache coming on. She appreciated that he'd come to her rescue, but she didn't want him to get the wrong idea. She wanted to shout at him – "I am not your girl!" – but she knew that in this situation, it would only make things worse, so she kept her mouth shut.
"Don't be tricked by her appearance," the woman hissed, "or you will be..."
Leonard walked over to the woman and shook her fiercely, interrupting her sentence. Then he looked her in the eyes and said, "You smeared Catherine Winston's good name without evidence. Don't you know that I could sue you for slander and defamation of character!?!?!? Furthermore, your husband covets my girl! You are lucky that he hasn't been charged with s****l harassment! I have money and good looks. My girlfriend turned her nose up at your husband. He is a greasy, ugly, scum bag, but now that I've seen how you look, I can see why he goes looking elsewhere for love!"
When the woman heard Leonard's last accusation, her jaw nearly hit the floor, and it seemed that she'd finally lost her momentum.
Leonard ground his teeth together and said, "If you ever slander my girlfriend again, you will regret ever being born."
Catherine was stunned by Leonard's behavior. He'd never stuck up for her like this while they'd been married. And with him vouching for her, the onlookers began to take her word over the woman's word. One of the nurses said, "Wow, that man is so handsome. I want to marry him!"
One of the doctors turned to her and said, "Don't even think about it. Look at what he is wearing. Ordinary people could never afford an outfit like that. He is out of your league!"
When the woman heard this, she clenched her fists at her side and grumbled: "You guys are so blinded by this guy's good looks that you can't see the truth when it's staring you in the face. Who knows how many times this woman has cheated on you all?"
Suddenly, one of the patients that had been waiting to see a doctor stood up and walked over to the woman. "Enough!" she exclaimed, and then she struck the woman across the face with her open palm. "This hospital doesn't need you gumming up the works. Now get going before I get you going!"
The woman raised her hand and touched the place where she'd been struck. She looked around the room, and when she saw that there were no sympathetic faces, she finally left – and once she was gone, the crowd quickly dispersed.
