Chapter 5 The sun broke over the horizon, lighting up the valley in gold streaks. From his perch on the back deck, Beck took it all in and grinned. The sense of hope and excitement yesterday had stamped out came back full force. He leaned on the railing, coffee cup clutched in his hand, and breathed in the crisp, cool air. Yesterday had started much the same way, though. In fact every morning since he’d come back had started this way. It was the thing he missed the most while living in Portland. Greeting the day as the sun made its ascent grounded Beck in a way he couldn’t find anywhere else. He’d taken it for granted growing up, but he knew better now. This time of the morning was necessary. It helped him deal with all the stresses of the day. There were always sure to be some, and it
