Chapter 4 Jordan was glad John had made his home on the Southeast side of Portland, not far from where they’d grown up. Their parents had fancied themselves hippies—though really they just wanted to freeload—and had settled into a tiny, rundown bungalow in the Hawthorne district. The house had only gotten worse as the years went by. Despite his discontent with his neglectful parents, Jordan loved the neighborhood and its eclectic mix of houses and people. He spent countless hours wandering the streets, peering into the windows of the shops that lined Hawthorne Boulevard. The sheer number of clothing boutiques fascinated him, but his favorite place to browse was Powell’s City of Books. The huge store had drawn him nearly every day as a teen, and no one seemed to mind if he spent hours wand
