The moon shone down in the sky, casting a creepy glow over the pack's gathering place. Alpha Ryker's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched as he surveyed the crowd. He took a deep breath, his chest expanding beneath his black leather jacket.
Sophia, radiant in her white dress, with her raven hair and striking green eyes, stood beside him, her heart racing with excitement and her eyes shining with anticipation.
She can't wait to be announced as the Pack's Luna. She had found out that she was mated to Alpha Ryker some months ago, and when she did, she didn't hesitate to give him her body when he asked for it. They were mates after all. Not everyone in the pack knows about their bond yet, and that's one reason why they haven't taken things forward, but a few days ago, Alpha Ryker had promised her that he would announce her as his mate in the mating ceremony, and let everyone know that she was the one. She couldn't wait to be called Mrs Ryker Danemount. She had always dreamed of being mates with the Alpha, since she had been secretly crushing on him right from when she was a teenager and she was really glad that the moon goddess granted her heart desires. Sophia almost went crazy with excitement.
But Alpha Ryker's expression turned grim, his voice firm but laced with a hint of sorrow:
"My dear pack," he began. He didn't like the fact that he was about to fail his promises to Sophia, but it was for the best. The Pack's affairs should come first. Duty and responsibility before pleasure. He loves Sophia, but he can't choose her as his mate. She is an Omega. The elders and the council members wouldn't want an Omega as their Luna. They want someone better and stronger. She is weak and powerless. She can't shift, neither can she fight for herself, not to talk of the Pack if need be.
“I have come to realize that our Pack's future requires a different path. Sophia is the one chosen for me by the moon goddess, but I don't want her to be my mate. I can't ignore the elders and council members' disapproval. They won't accept an Omega as Luna”. He paused, his gaze flicking to Alice, who smiled smugly in the front row.
“I have someone else in mind, someone who can strengthen our pack's alliances and secure our future.
“You all know her. She is the daughter of Beta Karl, the Beta of the Red Flame Pack,”
Sophia's face fell, her eyes widening in shock as Alpha Ryker's words sank in. She took a step back, her hands instinctively reaching for her chest as if to shield her heart from the blow. Her eyes flashed with anger, her lips pressed into a thin line, trembling with restrained emotions.
“How could he?” She whispered, her voice barely audible.
The words cut through her like a knife. Alpha Ryker's rejection was a blow. She never saw this coming. Why was he going back on his promises to her? This is far from what he promised her under the moonlight last night when they made love. His rejection was a blow, but the pain was compounded by the pack's murmurs of agreement. They all agreed to his rejection. The fact that Alice, the daughter of Beta Karl of the Red Flame Pack smirked at her made her want to cry, but she controlled herself. She has to act strong. She had a strange look on her face, and Sophia couldn't pretend that she didn't know what it was. It was a look of “I told you, didn't I?”
Earlier today, she had encountered Alice on her way to the pack house. Alice had told her that she had a surprise for her. Sophia didn't think much about it. She just waved it off. She had even gone ahead to tell Alice that she would love to see the surprise. Never did it occur to her that this was what Alice was planning.
“How could you!” Her voice was loud enough for Alpha Ryker to hear this time. She clenched her fists trying to hold back tears. She didn't want to cry in front of them.
“How could he do this to me? After everything? He lied to me. He played with my feelings. He never loved me” she thought, feeling a wave of betrayal wash over her. This was not what he had promised her. He was going back on his words.
With a heavy heart, Sophia turned and walked away, leaving Alpha Ryker and the pack behind. As she walked away, a tear left her face , but she wiped it immediately. She just kept a cold demeanor, and high shoulders, pretending that she wasn't hurt when all she wanted was to bawl her eyes out.
“I hereby announce Alice Maxwell, daughter of Beta Karl of the Red Flame Pack as my mate and my Luna,” He gestured for Alice to walk up to him. Majestically, Alice stood up from the chair as she walked towards Alpha Ryker's direction. She has a proud smile on her face. She was about to be Luna of this great Pack. Something she has always wanted. Finally!
Anger washed over Sophia as she heard the two people exchange their vows. She had stopped to watch them. It should have been her. She would have been the one exchanging those vows with Alpha Ryker, not Alice, but what could she do? Maybe Nala was right. An Alpha can never take an Omega as his mate. They would want either an Alpha Female or manageably the daughter of a Beta, not a lowly Omega like her. Nala was right after all.
Nala was an Omega too. Though Nala was way older than her, she was like a friend to Sophia. She and Sophia work together as the palace maids. When Sophia had told her that she had found out that she was mate with Alpha Ryker, Nala had told her not to glory yet. Sophia could vividly remember that she thought that Nala was just not happy for her. She had thought that Nala was jealous of her, and from that day, she started distancing herself from Nala, until the bond they shared broke completely.
“Sophia, wait,” A voice sounded behind her and she clenched her fists in anger. She didn't turn to face him. She didn't want to.
“What do you want from me? Haven't you done enough already? What do you want now?” she asked through gritted teeth.
“I want to tell you something very important,” Alpha Ryker said, but Sophia scoffed.
“You want to tell me about your new mate?” She scoffed.
“I never expected this from you. You shattered my heart and my heart into pieces. You betrayed me. Just know that I will never forgive you for it. You will regret it,” she turned around to leave, but she stopped walking and turned to face Alpha Ryker.
“Congratulations on your union with Alice. I hope you find peace with her,” she paused, but continued almost immediately.
“Or maybe not,”. Sophia's feet carried her away from the gathering place, her mind reeling with the shock of Alpha Ryker's rejection. She had given her heart to him, and he had crushed it beneath his paw. She had given him her body too. Her virginity just because she felt that they were mates. The pack's disapproval stung, but Alpha Ryker's betrayal cut deeper. She never saw this coming. Why would she, when he had promised to make her his, to announce her as his mate before everyone in the pack.
Taking a deep breath, she walked away to Nala's house.
Nala's eyebrows furrowed, and her lips pursed, giving Sophia a disapproving look. She crossed her arms, her eyes fixed on Sophia with a mix of concern and warning. She had even forgotten that someone like Sophia existed, but seeing her again…. She didn't know what to say. She just opened the door for her and walked away, to let her enter.
“Nala?” Sophia started, but Nala cut her off.
“What are you doing here?”
Sophia sighed. “You were right, Nala. You were right. An Alpha can never take an Omega as his mate,”
Nala burst into laughter and it made Sophia embarrassed, but she didn't try to yell at Nala. If she had listened to her earlier, she wouldn't have been so disappointed when Alpha Ryker rejected her. She had told Nala that Alpha Ryker loves her and he would do the opposite of what Nala was saying.
After a while, Nala reined control on her laughter. She had seen how embarrassed Sophia looked and she didn't want to make her uncomfortable.
“I told you earlier, didn't I? I warned you. They can never take an Omega as their Luna, even though the moon goddess herself comes down here to force them,”
“How did you know this? How are you so certain about it?”
Nala chuckled as she heard Sophia's questions. She hasn't told her her secrets yet. Maybe it's high time she tells her.
“I was once a mate to Alpha Vanthorn, and the mother of his child,” she answered and a frown crept its way to Sophia's face. Alpha Vanthorn is Ryker's father. If Nala claimed to be Alpha Vanthorn's mate, that means she is Ryker's mother?
“Alpha Vanthorn, as in the Alpha of the Silver Crest pack?” asked Sophia, that frown still evident on her face.
Nala nodded her head. “Yes, my child. The Alpha Vanthorn that you know,”
Sophia gasped when realization dawned on her.
“Are you Alpha Ryker's mother?” she asked and Nala nodded her head.
“Of course I am. It is a long story though, but Alpha Vanthorn made sure that no one knows that I am Ryker's mother. Not even Ryker knows that I am his mother. He was taken away from me as soon as I gave birth to him, and he was given to Matilda, to take care of him as her son,”
